You screen looks normal to me. You are using the Garmin City Navigator map (CN NT NAVTEQ). If you are using MFM NT, the land would be coloured green, not grey. You should only use 1 map, either MFM NT, MSM NT or CN NT. You can set it at Home Screen > Settings > Maps & Vehicle > myMaps. Tick only...

How often is the traffic updated? In my impromptu test I think it is about every 30 minutes. Is it variable according to traffic?

I think it cannot be done. Bosch player uses Linux, while Garmin Mobile XT uses WinCE.

I think all new garmins show POI at zoom levels 80m or below. I'm using Nuvi 3790, when using Garmin's City Navigator maps, the POI only show at zoom levels <= 80m.

When using MFM maps some POI do show up at zoom levels <=80m.
