Difficult to connect 50LM to PC

Postby vash_h » Mon Nov 25, 2013 10:11 pm

Hi..

just wondering if any of you encounter this problem.

i have a barely 1 yr old garmin 50LM (bought last year during PC Fair, around december)

recently i find it difficult to connect to PC using USB cables. when i connect it will ask me if i want to proceed to Mass Storage or Garmin mode. as usual i select mass storage, and there will be a bar that moves from left to right.

recently before it manage to get to the right it will reboot and goes into garmin mode automatically. then sometimes if i manage to connect and start updating the 2013.30 MFM map, it will reboot itself.. as if it lost connection to PC.

This is very frustrating. anyone encounter this before?

I encountered this previously on my Nuvi 205W (Taiwan unit) i bought and was using before this 50LM... initially it showed this problem then later on it just refuses to detect on my pc.

i tried different usb cables and even my camera usb cable.. all same. i even tried on different usb ports, both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports... samething happeend.

i travel frequently for my job and rely on my garmin to guide me. i cannot afford to send this in for repair. anyone can help me out?

Check to see if there is a firmware update to resolve this issue. You may have a USB connector problem (dry joints...etc) that needs debugging.

If all fails.... use a SD card... it's the safest way to update maps.

I think Bro moeyhc has written some steps a few weeks back... I have save it as below:-

1.Download the Garmin NT maps from its official site;

2. Rename malfree_201320_2465.exe to malfree_201320_2465.rar or malfree_201320_2465.zip

3. Unrar or Unzip the renamed file

4. Goto Mapdata folder to copy the Gmapsupp.img and go to the JCV folder to get the SgMyMfre.JCV file

5. Copy both files to the appropriate folders in your SD card (Map & JCV)

6. Make a text file and rename it gmapsupp.unl. Copy your GPS unlock code into this file and save it. Do not hit enter key after pasting the unlock code into the file. Copy this gmapsupp.unl into the Map folder. You have now unlock your map for this GPS

Thanks Bro aikliang. I was surprise someone actually saved the procedure...

Reading through it I found some missing instructions. Below please find the updated copy:

Back up all files before you start !!!

1.Download the Garmin NT maps from its Official Site.

2. Rename malfree_201320_2465.exe to malfree_201320_2465.rar or malfree_201320_2465.zip (Filename depends on the map you are downloading and are listed here as an example only)

3. Unrar or Unzip the renamed file.

4. Go to the Mapdata & JCV folder to copy and save the Gmapsupp.img and SgMyMfre.JCV file to the appropriate folders in your SD card (Map & JCV)

5. In the Map folder (in SD card where your Gmapsupp.img is residing) make a text file and rename it gmapsupp.unl. Open the Gmapsupp.unl file using Notepad and copy your GPS unlock code (generated during the Garmin map download) into this file and save it. Your Unlock Code must be on the first line of the file. Do not hit enter key after pasting the unlock code into the file.

6. If you have problem generating the gmapsupp.unl file I have attached a copy for your use. Use winrar or winzip to extract the gmapsupp.unl from the gmapsupp.rar file. Open the gmapsupp.unl file using Notepad (or any text editor) and paste your unlock code over the line "PASTE CODE OVER THIS TEXT". Save the file and copy this gmapsupp.unl into the Map folder of the SD card.

You have now unlock your map for your GPS.

Tips:
You can also add more then one unlock code to the gmapsupp.unl file. This good if you have more then one Nuvi and only have one SD card to use. To add more unlock code:

1. Open the gmapsupp.unl file in the SD card map folder using Notepad
2. Copy the new unlock code and paste it behind the first unlock code with no space between the two.
3. Do not hit the Enter Key and save the file.

You have just create a SD card Map for 2 Nuvis..

Hope this helps.... Cheers!.... use at your own risk....
