But can I use MFM custom POI with MSM maps? I saw on them download thread that the alert points may not be as accurate.
Anyone tried combining both? Im getting a 255w soon but liked the custom POI in MFM, especially those speedtrap alerts.
Thanks in advance.
HI. Sebastian
i'm a newbie using 255W - bought it 2 months ago. I had just changed over to MFM maps fully recently and i had not any problem with it.
1) file name conflict (over-riding) problem:
MSM doesn't use the filename gmapsupp.img anymore. they use the filename gmapprom.igm. so once you generated MFM's gmapsupp.img and copy it to your device, you shouldn't have any conflict problem. however would advice you to be back all your files inside your nuvi before you add on MFM so you can revert to pre-mfm installation status should you encounter any problem.
2) lag problem - actually no - i found that MFM does faster recalculation compared with MSM. and it starts up faster and it displays map faster too.
3) map details - MFM has more map details and the map is finer - i don't know the proper word to describe it but once you seen both and compared both, you'd know what i mean.
4) accuracy - you bet MFM is accurate. For the first time, my device gave me the correct route to work. i've been testing MSM for the past two months and it kept giving me not only the wrong route but also wrong advice such as dashing across oncoming traffic (and running counter traffic), making U-turns illegal (at places where it is not only prohibited but dangerous as well), the list continues. no such dumb stuff with MFM.
5) POIs - MFM has more, it's more up to date and they are able to use the business entity's own logo in place of name on the map - saving space yet showing more POIs. (well done to all members and contributors of MFM).
6) accuracy of gps location of POIs - well, this all depends on the quality of work submitted.
a. Some inaccuracy is bound to happen - not anyone's fault really but maybe to due the innaccurate signal received by the device - i had received noticed such inaccuracies in my own device. the resulting coordinates showed the restaurant in the middle of a street whereas i plotted the coordinates right in front of the restaurant. could be due to the various trees and buildings around that affected the accuracy of the signal received by my device. therefore it is really up to the individual member to verify the accuracy of their POI coordinates before submitting to MFM. i had held back several submission because of this. will only submit after i've double-checked the accuracy of the coordinates.
b. Do you know that MSM had actually intended some espionage sabotaging on MFM? they (the administors of MSM forum and their members) deliberately and intentionally populated their own map with fake POIs hoping that some-well meaning hobbyist will copy these fake POIS to be submitted to MFM. and they proudly admitted to this in their forum, openly and proud. they also joined MFM and contributed fake POIs directly here.
see? in the end, the quality of the POIs and maps is only as good as the commitment and sincerity of the members and hobbyist who contributes here.
This is the one act of MSM that finally decided me to go MFM full time and i have no regrets. And you can bet i will tell all that MFM is the best gps mapper in this region.
7) using MFM custom POI with MSM map - yes, you can do it, but why only go for the MFM custom POI when you can have the whole package (the map and pois?)
okay, to all "sifus" out there, correct me if i'm wrong.
also, my thanks especially to Bro CWYAP and all the others here for their patience and help during the past two months, they are too modest seeing they are very experienced and they are very patient and very helpful to newbies, especially technicall-challenged newbies like me. it is indeed an enriching and humbling experience for me to be acquainted with a group of such great people.
so a word of
