I think his problem is more than just the USB connection as the unit also hang during operation. The best way is to use a SD card to run and disable the internal memory map (either by renaming or de-selecting within the GPS).... cheers!

Electromagnetic Interference/emi is not too take effect, core molded only filterting the low noisy.
but not effect to USB data transfering, it's not need feq bounching block because usb it's handshaking data..
unlike video/audio freq in wiring that must use filter to avoid bouncheing effect.

USB not only for serial data transfering (hi-freq), but have +-5 DC current POWER too that can used for powersupply.
USB cable specification using 2 term, that was POWER cable, DATA cable, and Both.

Most USB cable uses AWG 26 gauge for power (Red & Black) and AWG 28 gauge for Data (White & Green). This is enough for a load of <1A. So, power is never an issue. The transfer rate greatly depends on the cable quality typically its shield and construction. It is this controlled impedance environment that allows for error free high speed data transfer.

Anyway, it is beyond this forum to discuss cables and its characteristics. We are here to help a fellow member resolve his GPS hang problem. Possible solution:-

- Change and use a different USB cable (even if you tested it good).
- Use a different map in the SD card.
- Deselect all maps in the main memory.
- Try updating the firmware.

Hope this helps.... cheers!

Hmm I've tried using a SD card to place a new map, but it still hangs on the loading maps screen.

My problem is slightly more defined now. It hangs immediately upon the first time I switch it on, at the loading maps screen. Thereafter, if I hold the off button for >5seconds, it switches off and back on and then it loads normally. It takes a while to get the correct satellite position, and I can use it normally.

However, if I switch it off after that, it gets the same problem again when I next switch it on. So essentially, it works every alternate time I on it.

I've not been able to get a USB cable that works for my GPS just yet, so I can't delete it. How do you disable the GPS maps from the normal screen?

The map can be disabled at Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info, but this only affects current map usage. As for maps loading at boot up, it does absolutely nothing.

You should try updating the firmware (if no update is available, reinstall with current version). However before updating, remove ?:\Garmin\GUPDATE.GCD first. Also be sure to update using appropriate firmware version (HWID). BTW, do you know which localization does your Nuvi belong to?

Yep, I bought it from Amazon, so it should be North America.

So you should be using Webupdater to update.
