Guys, need some help. Have someone going to the US soon, so thought I'd take the oportunity to get a new toy ... bloody mind boggling, the models available.

Am now looking for a pure auto navigation device. Have always been a 60C/CS/CX dude due to the tracking capability and have never explored the Nuvi's - will still my trusty 60Cx for tracking though. Damn cheap from Amazon, compared to the 60Cx days ..the 260W costs USD236 which is amazing value ..

Which Nuvi model to look at if I want:

1. The biggest screen - seems like a ll the "W" series is what I need
2. Can run our maps - Ant says the 255W has issues, so that's out. Thinking the 260W but because its new, wondering if our maps will run on it.
3. Voice prompts - this seems to be on the 260/260W only.
4. Don't want all the non-GPS crap eg. FM transmitter, MP3 etc - eliminates the 7xx series. although the 3D buildings will be awesome, but don't know if our maps can have this feature ...

Any suggestions/recommendations? Sounds like the 260W at this stage but the risk of not being able to run our maps is a huge bummer ... what about the older models?

Hi, Jimmy.

I bought the Nuvi 5000 solely for its huge screen --- I'm not getting any younger as far as eyesight (and other things  ) go!

I use it here exclusively in Ulu Michigan, so I haven't attempted loading MSM/MFM maps on it, so can't comment on that. (It stays in my car.)

It's pretty much a bare-bones Nuvi, with minimal non-navigation features. It does have voice capabilities, with a choice of several flavors of English (US, Brit, and Aussie) as well as some other languages. (I have "Karen," an Aussie singer, as the voice on my 5000.) It does not have hands-free speaker phone features for my mobile phone.

The biggest drawback is that it does not run on batteries. Hence you have to get a set of third-party accessories (battery box, etc.) if you want to use it outside the car. (But it's really too big to put into your pocket --- I use my Vista HCx for that.)

Cheers!

Thanks Howard, that is a massive screen but the lack of batteries is more than a bummer ...
Seems that the prices in Aust are pretty close to Amazon + shipping, so no real point buying from the US - less than USD10 differential + I get Australia-wide maps.

But the problem then becomes the Aust maps. Once I have them, there is very little incentive to actually map Perth anymore ... that is NOT a good thing ... this is a dilemma I have never had to worry about before!

Still gravitating towards a 260W ... AUD325 down the street from me ... less than RM1k, which is unbelievable value ...

Jimmy, Nuvi 260W is wide screen. Should load our maps... (I guarantee.... ) . When Antyong say the 255 has problems, he probably refers to it not displaying POIs while you are routing...... I didn't understand this until I try out my neighbour's Nuvi 205 ... The navigation screen of the Nuvi 205 behaves like my old Streetpilot C320. It will show you the route in front and where to turn.... but until I got the Nuvi 310 and compare... I said ...wow !!! what a world of difference. The Nuvi 310 can show me a lot more 'side roads' or data or POI or buildings (eg) beside the dark purple line shown in the centre of the screen........ but both the C320 or the nuvi 310 will get me to my destination.

Anyway... I don't know if the Nuvi 260W will show other POIs while you are routing........

Next... I think it is worth it to buy in Australia.... Many Singaporeans buy from Australia.... :)
