Anyone try the Easter Egg ?

When you're at the main screen, hold your finger on the time in the upper right corner for more than 5 seconds, and you'll get to an info screen, and back/next buttons lower right of screen.

There's some sound diagnostics, and screen tests, and lots of info pages - including one with some battery status/statistics. To get out of the diagnostic mode, power cycle your unit...and when you do this, it will take some time to lock on to satellites.

Have fun...

Just be carefull not to adjust the settings there. Bear in mind, you will have to wait longer to get satelittes fix after that too.

This is a "hidden" diagnostic menu used by service center to test unit.

I use it to test re-sale units before buying it

My guess, is that going into diagnostics menu clears the existing pseudorandom code, ephemeris data and almanac data, thus when back into normal mode, the unit has to re-collect the data from the satellites ... thus the longer lock-on time ...

You are partially correct ... these data are valid only for a certain period of time so if you GPS remains off for a time longer than this period of time, it will still have to collect fresh data for accuracy of GPS ....

As extracted from Garmin Website :
Link : http://www8.garmin.com/aboutGPS/manual.html

The pseudorandom code is simply an I.D. code that identifies which satellite is transmitting information. You can view this number on your Garmin GPS unit's satellite page, as it identifies which satellites it's receiving.

Ephemeris data tells the GPS receiver where each GPS satellite should be at any time throughout the day. Each satellite transmits ephemeris data showing the orbital information for that satellite and for every other satellite in the system.

Almanac data, which is constantly transmitted by each satellite, contains important information about the status of the satellite (healthy or unhealthy), current date and time. This part of the signal is essential for determining a position.
