Drool baby... drool... =P~

There are strong indications that Garmin will soon add a new series to their handheld GPS lineup. Bass Pro Shops was displaying a page for a product called the “Garmin Dakota 20″ with an associated screenshot that looked similar to the current Garmin Oregon series. The page has since been pulled from their website. Similarly, GPS City in Canada has a page on their website where the product SKU is listed as “DAKOTA10″.

High-sensitivity GPS features a 2.6” touch screen. Features: 2.6″ touch screen Built-in basemap 850 MB internal memory. This is somewhat strange as the Oregon is generally described as having a 3″ touch screen. Nonetheless, it looks like the Oregon will soon gain a sibling in the Garmin Dakota.

Update:
While this may very well be a sibling to the Oregon, perhaps seen as a replacement to the eTrex line, there is another possibility to consider. The Garmin Edge lineup for cyclists has a similar shape to the Oregon, including a slightly smaller screen than the Oregon. Currently the Edge devices do not have a touch-screen. So it seems reasonable that the Dakota could be a new device in the cycling lineup, basically an Edge series device with a touch screen. The timing would make sense too. With Team Garmin heading to the Tour de France soon, a product unveiling at or before the big race would make sense from a marketing perspective. Time will tell.

The ad (by Canadian outdoor retailer Le Baron) claims both the Dakota 10 and 20 will support these features:

Built-in basemap
850MB of internal memory
160×240 pixel, 2.6″ touchscreen (same size and resolution as GPSMAP 60CSx screen)
High sensitivity GPS receiver
5.5 oz with batteries (1.3 oz less than the current Oregon)

The Dakota 20 will add the following:

3-axis compass
Wireless transfer
Micro SD card slot
Beeper
Altimeter
The Dakota 10 is listed for $340 (CAD) and the Dakota 20 $400 (CAD). Note prices are in Canadian dollars.

Well, the Dakota 20 is already in Singapore... Just saw it at PW this pm. Just S$599... Only a measly S$100 less than the Oregon 300. [-(

Very small... Very cute... Very compact... I like... =P~
