i have a question to ask, regarding Nuvi 1490T. My unit was bought in UK, and it has only UK map..
can i install MFM on 1490?

Yes, suggest to put the map file gmapsupp.img into SD card /garmin sub-directory

As with all gadgets, rule of thumb, BACKUP before any attempt of upgrade.

Not for Garmin devices.

is it mandatory to use mapsource to upload map into garmin?

i created the map and try to put it in the \garmin folder but the map does not appear in the GPS device..

EDIT...
After reading thru some posts, i just realized that for Nuvi 1xxx series, we need to put the map into \Map folder instead of \Garmin folder..

gonna head out to test now.. hope to contribute more on the JCV development :peace:

the method didn't work

this set also have problems similar with 1460
http://malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4710&start=160

1) If you choose "Browse map" to find a location, you will probably spend half a day trying to accurately pinpoint the location you want to save. This is because when scrolling on the screen, the map floats around uncontrollably and randomly in any direction making it very difficult to pinpoint the location. And what kind of bullshit...the retailer tells me that this is a feature of the 1460. A feature that does not help to make things easier but more difficult is not a called a feature but a technology srcew-up. A software problem here?

2) When I tried to search by postal code using "Address", it is very fast and accurate. However, the problem is that this search method for a location is fixed. You cannot save the location of, say a shopping mall one street away from the postal code you keyed in, other than the location of the postal code that was keyed in. There is no arrow-head cursor to allow you to do this. This is a useful feature, for example, say you want to go to a school near your friend's house but you do not know the postal code or the road name of the school. The fastest way would be to key in the postal code of your friend's house and search that first. Then you can scroll the screen and maneuver to the school and save the school as your waypoint or in favourite. My Garmin 650 allows me to do that. Another software problem?

3) Cannot see POIs whist in navigation mode. This has been discussed in this thread and Garmin says that showing POIs will slow down the screen refresh rate. Yes, GPS is for naigating but POIs such as landmarks are be very useful visual guides. It also makes the display so much better.

Nuvi 1490 LMT Paralysed - wont reboot or connect to pc.

my set is a Nuvi 1490 LMT (US) -
Brand new. Bought because hardup for the Lifetime US/Canada Map Updates and with the so nifty ecoRoute HD Vehicle Communicator to display car OBDII data on Nuvi screen (really cool ....... when Nuvi works...!!)

Problem:
1. Completely hung - wont start (either hangs at "LOADING MAPS" or just flashes and switches off

2. Wont connect to PC with USB - horizontal bar indicator hangs 1/5th of the way
(cant access folders & files of 1490 at all)

3. Wont Master Reset at all - just hangs at the "Are you sure you want to delete all user data" NO/YES screen. Simply paralysed.

What I Did Wrong (I think...):
1. Created "MAP" folder in Nuvi main memory, copied in mfm20101213.img
(Worked fine; no problems here) ...THEN ...

2. Found update MFM 2010-12-20 AND copied the img as mfm20101220.img
...think this is where all the Nuvi hung .............. I know, really stupid and
unnecessary, but just didnt think ..!!

Already tried the save working img to SD card to try to revive paralysed Nuvi - no change; no progress at all. Does not work for me.

Would appreciate any pointers/ideas ....

TIA
:frus:

SITUATION UPDATE:

Tried everything I could find by combing the extremely informative Nuvi 1460 thread (..in fact, a few times for each..) and FINALLY ended up with ........... NADA. :-({|=

Since I could not elicit any other suggestions/ideas with this post, I've finally concluded that my fancy new toy is well and truly ..... BRICKED.

My FINAL options were to either:
- return that sleek black paper-weight for a full refund; or
- return it in exchange for an equally sleek and black, brand new potential paper-weight.

Being the glutton that I am for punishment, I've decided to go with the exchange and am now expecting the replacement 1490 LMT to be delivered in a couple of days immediately after the holidays. Well..!! The fun continues ......

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYBODY ...!!

Garmin 1490T

Hi all,

I am using a Garmin 1490T device bought 2 year ago from Australia . Recently after loading the latest Malfree map, the device just hanged. Sent to the Garmin shop at Digital One in PJ for repair.

After repaired, I was told that the newer Garmin devices including mine cannot use Malfree maps. So they installed Malsingmaps instead. With Malsing map I cannot get update for my device since it is not Malaysian device. I want to go with Malfree map.

Is there any truth to this claim that my 1490T cannot use latest Malfree map? If not, how can I use latest Malfree map to work with my 1490T device?

And I was also told that the junction view feature in my 1490T device cannot work with Malsing or Malfree maps but can only work with Garmin Australia map since I bought my device from Australia. Is this true?

Need help.
