Here is my feedback to Garmin Corporate: The next update software should allow the 1460 to access maps through the USB to an external device such as a CDROM drive or an external SD adapter. This is critical - as more users are taking it to drive overseas. Im sure access time can be handled with fast USB. Also software updates can be done via CD because the downloads now lasts over an hour.
(I hope somebody reads this!)
Here is what Ive found re getting maps on 1460: Suppose I buy a NAmerica map from Garmin (say the 2010.40). After reading everywhere I assume the following will be installed in the MAIN memory which is at 1.8G for the 1460:
a) NAmerica gmapsupp.img Size 1.309G in folder /Garmin.
b) NAmerica JCV file D1279050A 38M in folder /Garmin/jcv
c) gmap3d.img and gmaptz.img 40M in folder /Garmin
Total required just to install a NAmerica map
with a working JCV feature: 1.35G
Notice that I am not using an SD because for the JCV to work the gmapsupp.img must reside in the /Garmin main memory folder together with the respective JCV folder (Please somebody - correct me if I am wrong! But this must be true after Ive read and tried everything using simulations).
Now the SingMal system working JCV requires about 995M of system memory. That leaves 817.2M for the 1.35G I need.
Result? :The Garmin memory arch cannot allow my SingMal-JCV to coexist with a proper NAmerica-JCV install.
I am not about to delete factory software that works! Even the Hakka language!
More thots for GarminCorp to improve in their next software update.
