My ASEAN Free GPS Map Project

Hi. I have a Nuvi 1240 with the latest MFM map dated 05042010. My problem is, custom icons only appear when browsing the map. When navigating, the unit does not display any custom icons. Any workaround? Thanks in advance.

Bro hust_noon, my 765 also exhibiting identical symptoms as yours. The custom icons appears when you power up the Nuvi and remains there when satellite lock is achieve and on condition you do not move. When you start moving, the icons disappears but appears back when browsing map.

I believe Garmin thinks that by reducing display, the map drawing during navigation can be faster. For MSM, I thought there is a version for those newer units that do not display custom icons?

yes, that was Garmin's explanation when they first started to reduce display for the 2xx and 7xx series, down from the 3xx and 6xx series. But for recent models, the explanation they have been giving is "to improve map drawing speed during navigation". Whatever the reason, I think it is faulty. They should have just let users decide how much detail to display.

I actually prefer the reduced POI screen as the main idea of navigation is for guided commentary to the end point POI.

If I want to see all POI, I would go to manual view ( ie.. touch the screen ) and manually search for a particular POI which is my destination.

One main advantage of Garmin over the rest of crowd of GPS manufacturers is that Garmin has Mapsource. A valuable tool for route pre-planning and multiple routing. A very useful tool for my trips up North of Singapore. I can plan multiple route and transfer to my Nuvi

Anyway the above constitutes my personal views and usage pattern

I guess to each his own. For me, I love the screen clutter.

I don't rely on voice command alone. Many times, I am not asked to go to an exact location. For example, they will say, the road just after ABC condo but just before XYZ building. I find it so much easier if the name of the building or location is shown on the GPS map. It helps me a lot, when I am near the destination.

I probably have not utilised the full power of Mapsource. I am simply too lazy. In fact, I always download the readymade map.

i want the icons to appear, so that the map look nice and colourful when navigating...but i guess for now, there's no workaround for this problem right? *sigh*

Like I said above, isn't there a version of this map that allows the custom icons to display on your Nuvi when navigating???? I am using that version.

Bro tks, your garmin really can show CUSTOM POI like petronas esso, etc while navigating? My nuvi1350 does not show while naviagting.
