are you by any chance using dual-boot i.e. 2 OS in a single machine? I had this also - WinXP on C: and Windows 7 on D:. Since Windows 7 is the newer OS, the bootloader will boot into Windows 7 unless you tell it otherwise. Even though I was on Win XP, Mapsource got install onto the Win7 drive i.e. D: and garmin directory + mfm was installed on C: but I could still open mapsource when running winxp.
Since removing win7 and using only winxp, everything is now installed into the c:/ root. I read in one of the foreign GPS Forum (can't remember which one), as long as your maps are installed in the garmin folder, GMPC or mapsource will be able to locate them, so there is no harm in installing the maps into c:/ but make sure it is in the Garmin folder at the root directory.
