Update nüvi®50 to nüvi®50LM SG/MY firmware

Postby khanuar23 » Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:00 pm

Hello guys
After living in Shanghai for 3 years, it is time for me to move back to Malaysia by the end of July. I bought nüvi®50 which is designed for users in mainland China. Is it possible for me to convert my nüvi®50 by updating the firmware of SG/MY nüvi®50LM into my device? Is it illegal?

Your default firmware can load our CGS Map compiled MFM maps via this link : viewtopic.php?p=123970#p123970

Yes, I know my device can load MFM maps and it also can load City Navigator Singapore/Malaysia NT 2012.10 from Garmin
but it cannot run Sg/My JCV feature because different firmware. Here is the screenshot.

I think better stop thinking to convert the firmware for the mean time.... very risky business...hehe. Lets other do first, never mind the JCV feature, without it can still navigate....

I also asked this question to Garmin China and they replied below, sorry translation not good, using google translate. Jia Ming American=Garmin USA, brush machine=modify device
[Hello,:
thank you for contacting garmin.
mainland all garmin navigator includes nuvi50 is unable to upgrade for foreign machine, can not brush machine. If you want to use abroad, must be individually to Jia Ming American website to purchase foreign map, can be used after installation.]

Keep the China firmware. Unless things changed, the China firmware allows you to use China maps without positional offset. Global sets sold outside China will suffer positional offset as much as 500meters when using Garmin China maps :ko:

Yes, China set will show accurate position with China map without offset, I downloaded one tile which is Shanghai map from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and use with my China set and no offset. I am not sure whether this map offset already adjusted or not. How about using my China set with My/Sg map or other map, will it have offset?

I used to own a Taiwan Nuvi 765 to use in MainLand China. Swap that for a localized 765 for use locally to get JCV/LA.

Your Nuvi will work fine in other countries with no offset. Only use in China is unique due to offsets imposed by Government rules :fire:
