Are you sure :-? :-'

MFM w/o SLA 1.63 reads as 33.1M while 1.64 reads as 33.9M
MFM with SLA 1.63 reads as 78.2M while 1.64 reads as 79.6M

Hi, link given by eastgear for v1.64 shown 46.94MB in zip file.

It's actually bigger, not smaller.

SLA-Garmin v1.64 gmapsupp.img - 79,640 KB
SLA-Garmin v1.63 gmapsupp.img - 78,168 KB

Thank you.

Sure, thx for the reply.

Best regards.

Re: Garmin Eastgear-malfree-SLA maps

Hi All,

I am new to this gps and seeking for helps here. Thank you in advance.

I installed MFMv164 into the garmin unit, I think the file is "gmapsupp.img".

As I purchased the garmin unit from eastgear, so I have the login on their website to download the map. When I look at the downloaded zip file, it contains "gmapsupp.img" too.

If I copy this "gmapsupp.img" from eastgear, it will overwrite the same "gmapsupp.img" from MFM.

How do I go around this?

Thanks for all the helps.

They are both from EastGear, thus they should be similar files. Just make a decision to use one.

Thanks silverbeauty.

If I use the file from eastgear, the next monday I update the MFM latest version, the file will be overwritten and I wont be able to use the SLA map from eastgear anymore, is that correct?

How do I keep the SLA map and still update MFM file weekly? Is that possible?

Just to point out that SLA/MFM map from Eastgear already contains MFM map, and I believe the update will follow MFM's weekly release. As I'm one of MFM members who had taken up the offer for free SLA/MFM map recently, I can confirm that the download link given is valid for successive versions (just need to rename the filename version). From the initial download of SLA/MFM v1.62, I'm able to download SLA/MFM v1.63 and SLA/MFM v1.64.

EastGear compiles MFM maps with SLA postal codes embedded as when a new version is released. Just be patient and download it from their server.

So I won't be able to separate 2 files as MFM and SLA that allows me to update only one instead of 2 together? Is there a way around it to split the file into 2 separate files? Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, it cannot be done as if strip the SLA overlay to be standalone, it won't be able to do routing. Thus, need a basemap (MFM map is use) to overlay.

I know someone did a strip of the overlay and then use another (*ah hem*) map as the basemap. But that is obviously infringement of copyright and violates the SLA license. It's been taken down since.

Just wait patiently for EastGear to release new SLA-MFM map weekly. Usually, it takes abt 2 days for them to release the new SLA-MFM map after MFM weekly map release.

Don't mess with SLA, it's no joke. A little history if I recall correctly: StreetDirectory was in trouble with SLA just a handful of years ago.

If I read the case correctly, and in correct prospective : SD being sued by SLA not because SD uses SLA proprietary maps but rather due to SD sueing others and demand monetary compensation for "copyright" infringement, claiming they are the rightful owner of the maps. :nutz:
