what is needed to track someone using gps?

hey guys.. i did try to search by there is way too much thread here...

i am interested to see ow i can track people by gps.... i guess any gps enable phone or device can be tracked? or somehow?

i am not weird or strange! i just find this int interesting and have been trying to find out more.. not trying to do mischief...

if this has been discussed b4.. please point me to the right thread. thanks!

Service provider in Sin does offer such a service. Check with SingTel and StarHub.

Google is also your best friend. search under GPS Tracker.

Most of our GPS are just a receiver. We need something that can transmit, example like mobile phone, for this to work.

Yes you can but not with your current vehicle GPS or handheld. You got to use a device meant for such purposes like a GPS Tracker. This transmits location via cellphone SIMM card for tracking or other communication means to a base station.

If you and yr friends all use garmin devices download and configure basecamp. Then configure it to track yr friend's devices (they must be turned on of course)

What you need is a Bluetooth GPS logger like the Holux M241, M1200E or M1000C. These devices will produce a track log showing the movement of the device in real time. The down side is the battery life (~15 hours) and the need to "install and retrieve" onto/from your subject. Placement of the unit is also a concern, it needs a clear view of the sky to navigate.....

Normal GPS units like Garmin Nuvi, Holux, TomTom etc are receivers only. They do not transmit any information, so there is no way of tracking the user.

There are some specialised equipment provided by certain service providers using GPS to track location and SIM card to send information to the service provider, which you can subscribe to. An example is http://gpsgate.com/index.php?id=55 But I think you are looking for something simple, right?

Well, the answer is Google Latitude. You need a mobile phone (can be iphone, Nokia etc) which can run Google Maps and have a data plan. Basically, you access google maps, and when you exit the application, you select to continue to share your location with Google Latitude.

All your "Friends" can see your current or last updated location. Likewise, you can see theirs, from your mobile or PC.

Of course, your mobile data must be left on for Latitude to continue to work. If outdoors, the device takes your GPS location. If GPS signal not available, it takes the nearest cell station. Not too bad. I drove along Bukit Timah Road, and my sister was able to track my location from her computer at home. Just that the update was of course not instantaneous.

If you are thinking of tracking someone, then you have to buy such a phone, install Google Maps, turn on Latitude, make him/her your "Friend" on google, give him/her the phone and hope he/she does not turn it off or leave it in the cupboard!

If you turn it on and walk around with it inside your pocket it will record every step you made up to 100,000 points. So, for 27.7 hrs (with 1 sec track log, more hours if set a longer duration of log) you are being tracked...

If your BH places one in your pocket and finds you stopped at a massage parlor for hours... it will be tough to explain.....

By "receiver only", we are referring only to the communications capability of the device.

Depends on what the TS meant by "to track someone" but I am quite sure he did not mean keeping a log of the track, which is what not only Holux but some Nuvi models and GMXT can do. What I am sure he is referring to, and what we are discussing, is the ability to track (as in to follow the movement) of someone remotely.

Even if checking the tracklog is considered one way of tracking, it will be very unreliable. It would require the person tracked to be a car driver, the device to be "on" all the time, which is unlikely to be the case if the device is "on" only when in the car, and the driver may not always turn it on, particularly if he is on a clandestine trip. There is almost always a limit to the tracklog data, after which it is overwritten. And at the end of the day, you still need to gain access to the device to retrieve the data.

And for many types of situations where there is a need to track someone e.g. parent tracking child in case of kidnap, owner tracking movement of container in case hijacked, this solution will not work. Coz if the child or vehicle detours, you will never know coz you will never get your device back.

A tracking solution such as the one I discussed about makes use of a device e.g. mobile phone, that is always on. The device will still be on when the person leaves the car, or takes the bus or mrt. The person may not even be aware that there is a Latitude app that is running.

A parent, wife or employer can monitor the movement of the person real time remotely via computer or mobilephone. So if your son says he is going National Library to study, but on your computer you see his phone moving to Orchard Road, then East Coast Beach before going back to National Library for you to pick up, you know what to do.
