March 9, 2011 -- Updated 1057 GMT (1857 HKT)
(CNN) -- A tsunami advisory has been issued in Japan after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan's main island of Honshu, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Wednesday.
The quake was centered 169 kilometers (105 miles) off the east coast of Honshu, directly east of the city of Sendai, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The quake occurred about 8.8 miles below the earth's surface, the USGS said. The expected height of the tsunami was only expected to be 0.5 meters (19.6 inches).
CNN correspondent Kyung Lah said she could feel the earthquake in Tokyo, 267 miles southwest of the quake's epicenter, and said the shaking lasted as long as three minutes, but that there was no significant damage.
TV Asahi showed video of boats rocking back and forth, as well as images taken from shaken city cams as the earthquake hit.
CNN's Kyung Lah in Tokyo contributed to this report.

The earthquake was reported by GDACS to be at 8.8.
I subscribed to GDACS and whenever there is any natural catastrophe around the world,
GDACS will SMS and email me. You can also subscribe to GDACS - it's free.
GDACS stands for Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System
Below is their website:

In view of the earthquake which may affect underground cables, access into their website may be slow.

on the GPS point of view... do you think this will affect GPS?

Quake moves Japan coast, shifts Earth's axis

Tokyo: The powerful earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami on Friday appears to have moved the main island of Japan by eight feet (2.4 meters) and shifted the Earth on its axis.
"At this point, we know that one GPS station moved (eight feet), and we have seen a map from GSI (Geospatial Information Authority) in Japan showing the pattern of shift over a large area is consistent with about that much shift of the land mass," said Kenneth Hudnut, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Reports from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy estimated the 8.9-magnitude quake shifted the planet on its axis by nearly four inches (10 centimeters).
