My 255W US version came installed with many voices like Russian, German, Spanish, Portuguese and others that I will never use. Some are TTS but most are not.
What is the safe way to uninstall unneeded voices?
Thanks, sifus!

Just remove any unwanted voice files (*.VPM) from ?:\Garmin\Voice folder and back it up somewhere for safekeeping. However, most of the voice files are able to be restored using Webupdater (in case you have lost your backup).

Ok, so does it mean if I get new vpm files from other sources, I can just copy them into that \Garmin\Voice folder and it will work?
No extra steps for TTS files when uninstall?
Thanks!

Re: How to uninstall voices?
Same steps for TTS voice files. Not all VPM files will work in all Nuvi models, some will be incompatible, and some incompatible audio may even cause some localized Nuvi model to be unbootable (temporarily bricked). Safest way to update voice files is to use Webupdater.

Sorry dude... That was what I thought earlier, so I delete all voices before flashing my 255w. Not satisfied after flashing to other region, then flash back to original one.
Then only realized web updater do not download voices that i deleted previously...

Cheers!

If Webupdater refuses to download additional updates such as voice, simply open GarminDevice.xml with Notepad and replace some value in the lines concerning the update and replace any value between <Major>x</Major> and <Minor>x</Minor> to "0".
Example:
Code: Select all
00</PartNumber><Version><Major>2</Major><Minor>0</Minor></Version><Path>Garmin/Voice</Path><FileName>English_American_.vpm</FileName></UpdateFile><UpdateFile><PartNumber>006-D0400-
Change to:
Code: Select all
00</PartNumber><Version><Major>0</Major><Minor>0</Minor></Version><Path>Garmin/Voice</Path><FileName>English_American_.vpm</FileName></UpdateFile><UpdateFile><PartNumber>006-D0400-
Note: Also make sure current GarminDevice.xml is meant for current HWID too (look for the string "<Model><PartNumber>xxx-xxxxx-xx</PartNumber>".
As for the advice to backup, I couldn't agree more.
