Gps connection by in car cable vs USB cable

Postby gpsnerd » Tue Mar 03, 2015 9:37 pm

why is that the GPS go into standby mode(ready to use) when its on the car cable, but goes to the typical (pc) storage mode, then standby mode, when using usb cable from a usb socket?

as the car has only one power socket, got to use the usb cable as the other usb port is for mobile phone charging

Hi buddy!

Please let us know what model GPS you're using... ... long time didn't play God's role... getting rusty! :peace:

If you are using the newer Garmin you have turn on the GPS then plug in the USB charger. It will prompt for Garmin mode or Mass storage mode. For older model (205, 300 ...etc) Plug in the USB cable and let it Boot to Mass storage mode. Remove the USB cable and wait for it to reboot. When you see the unit prompting a message at the bottom of the screen reinsert the USB cable immediately. It will now starts up in the navigation mode.

I made my own USB cable with a 18K Ohm resistor connecting the ID pin to Gnd... It works like any Garmin charger... :D

Note: you have to turn off the password lock of the unit. It will not work if this is enabled.

Hope this helps.... Cheers!
