Since nuvi205(W) cannot accept route files from MapSource, I've always done routing on the nuvi itself... sometimes it is a bit of a hassle, I know.

Hi all,

Appreciate if someone can tell me how to backup all the locations that has been added into the Nuvi? Is it possible to perform a backup to the laptop/PC? Also, can we use MapSource to create new locations and then somehow sync it back into the Nuvi?

Many thanks.

Hi joechong,
:welcome: to mfm. It is best if you would spend some time in the Newbie section coz there are a lot of information there to get you started with your new hobby. Did you get your new toy at the PC Fair @KLCC? To answer your questions:

1. All the POIs you have added into your nuvi are located in x:\Garmin\GPX folder called Current.gpx. All you need is to do a backup of this file.
2. Doing a backup of the files on the nuvi (and its SD card) is similar to that of doing any backups. Just copy whole folders into your PC. If you want to compress them later, you can.
3. You can create new Waypoints on the MapSource and transfer them into your nuvi. Use Transfer >> Send To Device...

Bro Zamad,

Thanks for the tips. Had been reading diligently the newbie section, so hopefully can master the device soon. For now, I'm just using Garmin Mobile XT on my Nokia N95. But am expecting my new purchase of Nuvi 760 soon.

Hi, I'm a complete noobie with a 205W.

I've been playing with mapsource, and although you say -

Mapsource says it has transferred the route, and in my case, by repeatedly hitting "detour", the route I put in appears.

But then maybe it was there all the time

Tried it just now, and MapSource said it transferred alright... but that's about all. Cannot press Detour coz it wasn't displayed (pix on the right). If the nuvi has a current route to follow, then the Stop and Detour will appear on the Main Screen along with Go Where? and View map. In this case only the latter two appeared.

Yes zamad, you have to give it a route to follow then hit the detour button.

I'm in Cheras, and the route it wants me to take to KLIA virtually goes through peoples' gardens :) Whoever designed the routing had a sense of humour!

While my ISP allows a connection, I also want to know how to put traffic lights on the mapsource map as there are many new ones in this area.

But that is not the same as routing from MapSource. What I said was about transfering a route from MapSource to the nuvi, even though it claimed as successful, the route never actually transferred. Pressing Detour is different. That, you can do one you have a specified route, and yes... you can press the detour buttons many times. It will go through all (realistic) possible routes to your destination. :)

OK Zamad, I take your point - as I said, I'm a complete novice to this GPS navigating stuff.
