A map that is truly free can be a thriving community, as evidenced by mfm.
Those who can, are happy to contribute willingly out of free will, not because they need the unlock code.
Similarly, the linux open source has a large and thriving community, even though it's free and there are many who are not able to contribute.
Checkout the other community. The poi contributions is on the downward trend. It appears to be a dying community.
Does it mean there's lesser to contribute or the community gets tired and moved on. More likely the latter reason.

This is one of the reason why I'm currently more active in MSM...
But when I travel to Malaysia, I'll be using MFM...

Re: Suggestion: Limit map download to member only
I strongly believe Maps in MFM will remain free.
But why restrict to Registered Members?
Now, it’s Free to register as a MFM members. The user who register themselves as a members will not loss anything or need to pay for anything, Its FREE!. All it takes is less than a minute to click and fill up name, email etc.
But the advantages when you register as a MEM members, you will help MFM to grow its members base. To grow its members strength. In long run, when MFM have enough membership, it will be able to self sustain without members contribution via Advertising.
To maintain FREE, MFM have to be self sustainable in long run. Members contribution and donation can be use for many other purpose.

To control and identify IP members
- what would the purpose be to know the IP, other than for stats purposes.
to encourage them whether or not in contributing POI
- this imposes restrictions & goes against the reason why MFM was set-up for...
only registered members by login as a member will be allowed to download Free Maps and not to Public
- again, this serves no purpose, other than to impress & boast about the 'huge' membership base.
If it is to be FREE, then let it be FREE

I just visited "asiagps" and noted they are now

people joined just to download maps, they never
contribute. I noticed that this is not happening here.
We have many very keen contributors (of tracks, of
waypoints, of CPOI, of ideas, of money etc) that is why
we are progressing so fast and so well....
Quite surprising to know that

Quite surprising to know thatI was hoping for a pan-SEA community map link-up. Looks like we'll have to expand into Thailand one day

Everyone has their own direction and way of controlling.
Some company selling product without asking for money but they charge customer when they do servicing.
Some product very expensive but NO hidden cost later when asking for services..
Some product are free on 'LITE' version but Charges on 'FULL' version...
BUT....MFM... Free for "LITE"....Free for "FULL" .......everything FREE...
MFM is only earning 'CREDIT'.....
Thanks MFM

No need to wish, it will definitely outshine MxM soon... very soon!

Remember, MFM need more heavy weight as well as some light weight trackers and contributors at SG in order to outshine the one you know who!
