antyong wrote:As everybody can see from the recent happenings, there are peoples who claim to be mappers but are in fact not. Mappers are a rare group of people.

In the past, we had given several special classes on mapping. Not all who participated become active mappers but then we did not expect everyone to have the interest, time and commitment to be a MFM mapper.

The best way to start is by mapping polygons or areas. These are for display purposes and will not affect our maps' routing ability. Mapping polygons give you a taste of mapping work and make you familiar with GPSmapedit. If you find mapping polygons interesting then you can consider tougher challenges. Our new mappers for East Malaysia all graduated from polygon mapping. They realize now the significant challenges but also the satisfaction of mapping a town. And they ask for more and more areas to be mapped

Therefore the answer is everyone can be a mapper :D

We have a well-oiled map updating machine. Many of our members are experts in tracking or contributing feedback or POIs now. Any newbie that needs help can be guided by more experienced members. Our mappers are dedicated, knowledgeable and willing to teach. But the map data that our mappers update is still some way from the Garmin or Papago map we use. The data needs to go through a preparation and then a compilation process. These two processes become slightly more complicated each time I add another option for our members or Garmin throws us a challenge.

Not sure if this is on the right track.

If MFM has a short term crisis, I'm sure us guys over at NZOGPS will be happy to step in to help (at least for one, I'm happy to do so), we also have a team of mappers (very stable) who are very able to step in to cover for one another when one of us are away.

Similarly, as long as we have access to the compiler, we are happy to compile maps for your guys if you are stuck for whatever reason.
