Personally, I wouldn't detect any improve quality....unless its made of an eroding surface that is meant to influence the luiquid content it holds.
Mugs are nice and as a novelty but unless anyone wants to cram his/her showcase of figurines or collectibles of cups and figures... it may not be as good a catch with popularity... Not unless its something like a Starbucks type...
I have had more than my fair share of mugs given away as part of prizes from Canine shows... it then becomes a giveaway soon after to neighbors and kids... luckily, they were FREE so not a spend gone wasted!
Perhaps its still an ongoing popular novelty in Asia... hence I may be wrong...my bad then...
No cups or mugs for me... I pass this one, esp. after clearing my attic of trophies and prizes gathered from 25 years in Canine Competitions incl. many mugs too....

I would like to suggest then, should the "Mug" concept be a favorite choice, can you rather opt for two sizes instead?
1) The size of a half or 1-pint beer tankard format (in porcelain/earthenware type, it will be a hit!!!).. Just like we have here in Germany and Austria.
2) The other being a soup size mug, slightly larger and rounded like a mini cauldron, popular like in old English style times... these are in demand the world over!
