Hi,

I would like to salute Bros Antyong, Fancheng, Ong CC, Sunn and other mappers who so selflessly set up MFM which is free and easily downloadable to everyone. This is not a easy task and it takes enthusiasm and dedication to do a job like this.

On top of this, there is some disagreement with MSM which caused some unhappiness in both camps. Hey, the world is looking at us. The spat between the two political parties are already causing us to be the laughing stock in the world. Hope that a hobby like this should not be turned into another ugly spat that is easily read by everyone.

So, I would like to reiterate my support to the group. Despite the allegations and unkind words, the group has plodded on and trying to do a public service. Keep up the good work so that we can drive around with a detailed digital map. This has enabled many drivers to move around easily and not getting lost so frequently or not knowing which is the best way to take. The other fun is just to look at the digital map which is a wonder by itself.

if copyright is what we all talk here, I would like to quote this example of a new connecting road between Old Airport Road and Dunman Road, it was already in MFM 1.42, I am not sure Bro Ong CC received from which contributor or he mapped it but I just track it one more time and sent to MFM (only)

I am pretty sure it is still not in the latest MSM 2.30b, nor the latest release from the other website. this is confirmed from a friend of mine who is a donor of the other website ...
old airport road.png
MFM v.1,42
Can we MFM officially declared that we now 'owned' this small link road, and no one should contibute and submit to MSM, else it will be an infringement of MFM copyright ?

:rox:

Obviously not, in Singapore LTA owns all digital maps copyright, unless one obtained a written permission, so far fom what I know only MapKing got it? and hence the LTA-Mapking project we all aware of

What we are doing here are hobby works so stop this IP accusation stuffs ...

Copyright? More like KopiSai. Taking contributions from members then put them together to make a map DOES NOT make the map his very own.

Kudos to Bro antong and gang for all your hard work! Do not let slimeballs upset your good work.

Viva La MFM!

chinwy wrote:When a copyright is file in the copyright office, the data CAN NOT be pre-viewed by public before the filing date! Now that the data is public... it is public information, a claim cannot be file on the information. :finga: Also, where is the claim filed? Malaysia, Singapore...? Each has to have its own file numbers, and protected in that regoin only. Will cost quite a bit I would say for each submission. Any changes, new file must be lodge. Now you know why big boys cannot afford to give new updates by the week!

I think there is a misunderstanding between copyright and patent. You do not need to submit to copyright office for copyright to be effective but patent does. If you're the original author of the artwork, a mere copyright statement on your work is enough. In Jerome case, he has the copyright for his Sg map while OngCC and gang has the copyright on their Sg map as well. The claim now is OngCC's Sg map infringed on Jerome's Sg map based on examples given by Jerome. OngCC can dispute this claim by providing the original source of his work as proof of originality and the similarity is just a coincidence or OngCC can retrack and re-build the disputed map. Claims by some members that Jerome and OngCC does not own copyright of their map as they are based on raw data contributed by members are incorrect unless both of them cut and past the contribution directly into their map. In this case, the map was built based on raw data and not cut and paste. Merely releasing for use by the public does not diminish OngCC copyright of the map unless he explicitly remove his copyright claim. An analogy for this is 2 painters draw the same scenery and each claim copyright for their work. The public cannot claim that their artworks are public domain since the scenary belong to nature and not the painters. So we cannot claim that Jerome does not own his copyright because the road was design by some Sg authority. The best thing to do now is to retrack and redraw the disputed area as proposed by bro antyong in the beginning of this thread.

Bro kaybee, sorry, I do't agreed with this approach. Why should bro OngCC or MFM redraw the maps just because some joker claim they are the rightful owner of the maps ? What happen if after redraw, another m*****f***** claim copy right again, so, we redraw again ? again.....again.....
Bro, the $50.00 note in your pocket belongs to me (I claimed), so, please give it to me. :peace:

We do not need to redraw the entire map, just the portion claim by Jerome that is obviously an exact match. If it is an exact match, then it must have been a copy since Jerome's Sg map has been in existence first. Redrawing the map independently would not produce an exact match. We can choose to ignore him but if Jerome file an injunction to stop us from including Sg map in MFM, it would be much worst. It is prudent for MFM to address the issue for long term benefit of the users.

and the $100 in your pocket belong to me ... but it does not work that way with copyright issues.

Not necessarily as the software used to create the maps (gpsmapedit & cgpsmapper) could have done some processing (rounding of points or merging of polylines) which makes some areas in the final output like a copy of each other. The best way to compare is to look at each others original drawing.
