3. Mappers retain ownership over their source file (in mp format).

4. All our senior mappers agreed to allow MFM to continue the free maps project (by providing a copy of their map data) if they decide to go into commercialization or if they could not continue mapping anymore.
5. Continuity of the free mapping project is of great importance to everybody. Hence in addition to the senior mappers' pledge to provide a copy of their maps, we will take steps to ensure the forum and map compilation continues with or without Antyong. OngCC will be the back up site admin.

6. We will encourage, guide and nurture any new member who is interested to take the first step into mapping or map data collection.....

No problem with mapper owning the source file, however need some clarification. Assuming the mapper decided to leave MFM (not for commercialization or inability to mapping) but to start their own site, can MFM use the last up-dated .mp file and improve the map or need to start all over again?

My take is mappers are free to take the latest .mp file and MFM is also free to use the same file and improve it.

Just to make it clear to avoid all the hoo haaa later.

Item 4 & 5 should be read together, but to PUT it beyond any doubts, suggest to insert "latest" here:

[by providing a copy of their "LATEST" map data]

I agree with bro badrol. This is exactly what I have suggested here, last time during the MFM and MSM split:

viewtopic.php?p=2372#p2372

To recap, this is what I have suggested at that time:

-----
Note that I support both forums and I'm looking forward to contribute to both MSM and MFM. It's just that from a neutral/external point of view, I find that it's a bit unfair when MSM can still use all maptiles while MFM can only start with 4 maptiles only. Wouldn't it be better for both MSM and MFM to use all the existing maptiles and we can start contributing to both sites based on the current improvements? Meaning, the difference between MSM and MFM should only be on the contributions made *after* the split.
-----

And that is what MSM is currently doing. They are still incorporating KL-R, NPM-R, EPM-R and Perak-R into their latest map (the Garmin-compiled version) and it seems that they will be making further improvement based on the existing data, without remapping the missing areas from scratch. To be frank (apologise if it's too offending), I don't see anything wrong with that, *PROVIDED* that MFM also have the rights to use the latest data for Melaka, Johor, Singapore and East Malaysia. From users and contributors' point of view, I believe that would be the best solution. :peace:

I know, my view isn't in line with bro Ant's stand that mapper retains the ownership of the source data. And no, I am not recommending for MFM to reverse-engineer MSM's map data. I am just hoping that MSM and MFM can reach some kind of amicable agreements on this matter. Again, I apologise if my view above is too offending. :prayer:

Thank you.

Actually the mappers did agree that MFM will retain their last copy of their mp sent for compilation. Since we compile each week, it means it is a very current copy.

A true mapper thinks differently from others. He/she is not daunted by the huge task of mapping or remapping. In fact, he may not be happy if he takes over an almost complete map because he won't have the chance to do much work. That's why we started with blank maps.

If you had attended the mega GG, you would have seen how happy and enthusiastic robo, gerkeng, pauchai and mg were with their mapping and tracking. And they were very proud they progressed so much within a short period. If we had reverse-engineered Jerome's Johor-R, I doubt they would feel too proud about it.

If I follow the argument at MSM, MFM would have instant detailed Sabah and Sarawak map with additional icons and polygons. We would have left MSM trailing far behind. But that will leave no mapping opportunity for tympg, edchuang, alyem, pgkent and johntan. I am highlighting the thoughts of a genuine mapper versus those who merely claim to be a mapper.

Many of you guys failed to identify the importance of the people versus the maps. You focus only on the map you can use, not the hardworking guys behind it. Therefore you don't really give a damn about the injustice of their hard work being blatantly copied as long as the public get free maps.

At MFM, it is the people and their enjoyment of the mapping process that matters the most. This is our secret formula :D
