Making MFM a free iPhone map application

Postby joeyao » Wed May 19, 2010 11:21 am

I read in today's Straits Times Digital Life (19 May 2010) page 18 that Papago is selling MFM maps as an iPhone app for US$29.99. Is it difficult for the map experts of MFM to create a free iPhone MFM application so that others will not be able to profit from MFM? Just a thought. Mods, please delete if this is not an appropriate thread. Thanks.

memang Hebat!

Papago can SELL the MFM maps for P :$gone: R :$gone: O :$gone: F :$gone: I :$gone: T :$gone: ..... :champ: while MFM gives out for FREE....

Why is this happening? :ko:

Because MFM's map belongs to nobody, and NOT under protected by any applicable nor enforceable copyright laws, and once released into a public domain such as the INTERNET.... it's FREE for all, public property...... :peace:

And there's NOTHING that MFM can do about it....... (legally-speaking)

Don't assume the skill-sets of a mapper and of an apps developer are the same.

Developing an application from scratch will take time. And someone who can spend time mapping and developing apps and holding down a full-time job will have not much else in his/her life.

Btw, it costs US$99 a year to sign up to be an iPhone apps developer. This gets you all the latest code info and support and access to the submission process.

P/S: Nobody's stopping YOU from taking up the challenge of creating a GPS navigation app for MFM =D>

I want to reiterate that we would welcome anyone who can develop a GPS navigation software for whatever platform. Apart from developing the application, the developer must also provide the compiler to convert our MP files to the file format used by the application.

Also, the developer must be mindful not to incorporate other people's copyrighted code, otherwise you will get into a legal mess from which you may not be able to extricate yourself.

I am not really sure about this matter, so just a fleeting thought that crossed my mind.

Since mfm right now belongs to nobody, can someone, someday suddenly claim that MFM belongs to them and go and apply for a copyright or something?

A very scary thought...

Once again, I would like to draw your attention to this topic viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1972 . There is actually a method to do so but who will take the lead. Any lawyers here who can further advise on this??
