Update 1jan09: Per Antyong's post further below the official URL for Malfreemaps Online is http://www.malfreemaps.com/mfmonline . Antyong.com no longer redirects to mfmonline but to MFM public download.

Mmm ... Guess where Antyong.com redirects you to now? :-'

Malfreemaps Online

Why?
1. I am really impressed with the hard work of polygon mappers in addition to you guys. I believe everyone of us will have some satisfaction seeing our work online and accessible all over the net.

2. Google Maps is a very good online map system but they lack data for Malaysia e.g POI search. We can do better.

3. As a consultant for M3GPS, I am exposed to how big the demand is for Malaysia map data. Our hard work is not protected at the moment. I am concern of the possibility that some company will take our data, copyright it, and reverse charge against us for stealing their data ](*,) Publishing online is our first step to establish ourselves and our copyright.

4. Personal satisfaction of MFM being better than MSM

How it work
Kelvin will provide the server and bandwidth. MFM will provide the data. We will use Mapguide Open Source as the online map engine.

I will convert our mp to shapefiles, remove all routing and traffic info, and upload to his server. His Mapguide server will be able to generate online maps based on our shapefiles. I will be able to customize the display of our online map. We can follow our Mapsource display or use another scheme.

How we benefit
For Kelvin, he will use our base map data as foundation of his own business cum community site. He wants to activate Garmin's communicator plugin and encourage the public to use his website to share GPS data. He will probably accept business POIs for a fee.

For us, we will be to publish our online map with no cost. We will have our own site independent from Kelvin's to do stuff according to our own liking and direction.

The base map data from us will be ours. Kelvin will be ask to acknowledge MFM as the source of his data at his site. He will not touch our data.

Hi there...

I just visit this site. It was interesting. But can it do routing like Google Maps?

Thank you :good:

I don’t think so, as routing engine is always top secret to GPS navigator manufacturers.
