For those who wants to DIY battery replacement and do not know how to, here is a GPSMagazine's guide which provides a step-by-step guide with pictures on how to replace the battery of the Garmin Nuvi GPS.

There is also a video guide on Youtube for replacing the battery of Nuvi 255W.

Bro Jaguar, Gpssin & MoeyHC had successfully replaced the battery of the Nuvi 300. Refer to their step by step guide.

Does it make any difference to the battery if it is always used plugged in to the vehicle or should you use it stand alone sometimes? :-k

I believe some have used selected Nokia mobile batteries as substitute.

Bro wwloon.. does that mean that the garmin replacement battery is not available anywhere in Malaysia or due to the high price, some has resorted to using selected Nokia mobile batteries as substitute?

Nokia mobile phone batteries are more widely available than official Garmin batteries and I don't think you are supposed to replace the battery yourself (warranty issue).

As long as the Nokia battery could physically fit into your GPS device and it works, I don't see why one would bother with the expense of sending the unit back to Garmin to change the battery; it would not be cheap anyway.
