just looking for a pair for use in shopping center. used to own a pair of motorola talkabout which was rated at 10miles range. but it dun even cover 1utama new wing.

so looking for a new set. any1 got suggestion what to get which at least can cover the entire 1utama new and old wing lor.

I recently moved house, and let me tell you, the FRS radio helped us a lot. I borrowed 3 more handsets in addition to my Standard Horizon for this move.

That's certainly a very good situation in which FRS radios would prove useful. Too bad that we don't have PTT (Push-To-Talk) service with our cellphone operators yet. With PTT, your mobile phone can be set to a very, very, very long range two-way radio.

Not sure how Maxis/Celcom/DiGi will charge accordingly if they do introduce it someday - either by a fixed monthly cost (postpaid) or by no. of kBytes transmitted.

With PTT service, you can set up a conversation channel with a group of friends like a conference call. There's no need to dial their individual numbers. Just transmit and everyone in your group will hear you, just like with ham radio.

The catch is that you'll also have to upgrade your mobile phone to a PTT-capable one.

10 miles range, are you sure? Or did you mean 10 kms instead?

FRS/GMRS radios are not that effective in shopping centers (believe me I've tried at the old 1 Utama wing). Shopping centers are multi-segmented buildings with tons of steel and concrete. Signal from FRS radios are very much absorbed by walls, allowing very little to pass. That's why your Talkabout could not work because of the vastly reduced range.

FRS radios should work fine in huge concourse areas with little physical blockage, e.g. the KLIA's departure hall though.

The shopping mall security guards that you see are not using FRS/GMRS type of radios. They are most likely trunk radios (with repeaters) and their signal can even go down to the lowest parking basement.

If your FRS radio is already a 10-mile set like you said, don't bother looking for more powerful ones...you'll be wasting money bro.

The answer would be a Push-To-Talk (PTT) service integrated with your mobile phone carrier (we don't have this yet, but USA does). Anywhere there's a mobile signal the other party should be able to receive your transmission - whether it's in the new 1 Utama wing or even in the Kinabalu National Park!

Nice two-way radio. I see that it can also transmit in the 2m ham radio band (144 MHz). Do you need a license to operate one of these?

My brother has a Yaesu portable ham transceiver but I never bothered toying with it. The damned radio is too complicated! But it's nice to eavesdrop on taxi drivers, certain police frequencies, etc.

HX470 is a Marine VHF. Not legal to use on land. However, like all FRS radios, the unit has very poor range in FRS mode TX/RX in forest.
