did any body know where to buy motorola walkie talkie in penang which is good and cheap ?

Too bad that we don't have PTT (Push-To-Talk) service with our cellphone operators yet. With PTT, your mobile phone can be set to a very, very, very long range two-way radio.

Not sure how Maxis/Celcom/DiGi will charge accordingly if they do introduce it someday - either by a fixed monthly cost (postpaid) or by no. of kBytes transmitted.

With PTT service, you can set up a conversation channel with a group of friends like a conference call. There's no need to dial their individual numbers. Just transmit and everyone in your group will hear you, just like with ham radio.

The catch is that you'll also have to upgrade your mobile phone to a PTT-capable one.

Hmm... From my understanding, Malaysia already has PTT-over-Cellular (POC) for some years already. It works exactly like you mentioned above, and I know some people who have used it in Malaysia for some years already.

I have seen shops in Prangin Mall selling Motorola WT, but I have not been there for some months already. Don't know if they still sell. I am referring to Motorola GMRS/FRS sets.

Anybody know whether it is legal to use walkie talkie in australia. Would be traveling there in December and thinking of bringing walkie talkie there. What is the legal frequency that can be used there?

I have used many models of Motorola Talkabouts and one model of Midlands. I prefer the Motorolas. The Midlands set which I had was plasticky. The Motorolas are solidly built.

However the quality of the Motorolas seem to be heading towards plasticky look ever since the units seem to be "taken over" by Giant International Corp, China. Instead of Motorola, Giant provides support.

One thing which I am very peeved is that the advertised range, even if you discount the operating conditions, is ridiculous. Currently, I have one set 10 miles, one set 15 miles, but you will be lucky if you can get 1 km. But there have been times when I have been able to reach quite a distance. One memorable time was when I was at one of the service apartments near KLCC. High floor. Using a 5 mile set, I was able to reach someone shopping in Bukit Bintang.

Your frustration is typically common as the range is under optimum condition and that would mean either in the open sea of in a desert, with no buildings and no interference! Hence, the price too! ;)

I'm using the Motorola Pacer Plus and recently bought another pair of GP2000 but re-programmed it to 'talk' to my Pacer Plus.

I've also order a pair of XiR 8698, their latest Digital TRBO Range talkies...

You can use walkie talkies without licence in Australia but the approved frequencies are near 434 and 477 MHz i.e. those found in Australian models. US/Canada models are using 14 frequencies from around 462 to 467 MHz. Singapore walkie talkies are using 446.0 to 446.1 MHz frequencies. Malaysia also has its own approved frequencies. Basically, they are all different. So, technically you cannot use your set in Australia unless they are Australian models.

Having said that, I must say most of us are simply using our US or local sets in Australia.

10 miles range, are you sure? Or did you mean 10 kms instead?

US sets show the range in miles and 10 mile sets are very common. My Motorola T6500 claims 10 mile range. My Motorola T9510 claims a ridiculous 40 km range !!!

I'm living near Tanah Merah, where do you normally buy your talkies? Mustafa really have a wide range... am still waiting for my Digital Talkies from Motorola, hope they really have a superior quality else, would have wasted on the investment...
