Hi alyem

Hope this post don't find you too late. Just offering my 5 sens worth of input for your consideration. Is this your first step into DSLR? Have you used a film SLR before?

I use film SLR mainly for work and shoot slides. For my leisure shots, I use a full frame DSLR D700. There are two main draws for me of using full frame. Firstly, the advantage of full frame DSLR is that it allows me to use all my lens without alteration of focal length due to crop factor, especially my favourite wide angle zoom lens that would otherwise become a 'not so wide' wide angle zoom lens on a DX body like the D300. To be fair, one 'zoom lens' is always free - our legs.

Another draw of full frame D700 is its ability to give almost grain free pictures at extremely high ISOs compared to DX cameras. I will spare the technical aspects of the reasons for this. This feature is highly useful in indoor photography or dim conditions if you don't like to use flash or prefer to shoot with whatever lighting you are having. This is something which film cannot do as well without having to change a new roll of high ISO or push the ISO of low ISO films and suffer from graininess if it is not a desired effect I want to achieve. If not I have to use flash to cope with the low-light.

The most important aspect of camera equipment, in my humble opinion, is the lens. Good lens although expensive, hold their value very well. Camera body depreciate pretty fast as newer and better models come out so priority should be give to the glasses. My advice is to go for non-DX lens because they will still be compatible with the full frame cameras that would eventually be the replacement (this is my opinion). However, personally I do not attribute the value of camera equipment to its resale value but rather how much it fulfills my needs and how frequent I use it. I can buy an expensive equipment but if I use it frequently and it totally serves all my needs, it is good value. Affordable equipment bought and used only for a few times a year and spends most of its time in dry box is in my opinion, is more wasteful.

Can you ask for the price of D5000 kit and the GPS GP-1. Thanks.

After much thought I've decided to go for D5000's swivel LCD and interval shooting mode.
