Aquaponics - My Hobby

Postby NoX » Sun Jan 17, 2010 11:19 am

NoX's Aquaponics

http://affnan-aquaponics.blogspot.com

Aquaponics is a synergy between Aquaculture and Hydroponics. This is where the similiarity ends. In Aquaponics you don't use fertilizer instead fish tank water are use to provide nutrient for the plants. Water is biologically cleaned and return to the tank, resulting no water replacement is required.

Image

Water fed to growbed utilised "Flood & Drain" cycle which causes the Amonia present be converted to Nitrite and subsequently to Nitrate providing nutrient for the plants.

Follows are some picture of my Aquaponics setup.

Below picture of fresh Tilapia fingerlings in nursery tank, before they are big enough for my main tank.

4 month old Tilapia, ready for the Barbeque.

If anyone intrested, please visit my blog for more info.

The above "Bell Valve" siphon with reducer adapter is my own design, previously all design utilised straight stand pipe which makes it very unpredictable/unreliable. Having a reducer adapter causing venturi effect, making the siphon useable with low or even high inflow of water.

Some of bigger sketches of typical Aquaponics setup that some guy from USA asking me to explain or draft.

How big are these Tilapia. Never tasted a bbq one. Can invite us over for gg ? :$$:

How do they taste compared to those caught in the wild ?

You must be living in a big house to have the space for such a set up. =D>

Yoladu,

The tilapia average palm size after 4 month it can get bigger with time. The taste is good because water are well biologically treated naturally.

My house is average terrace, that's the beauty with this system, you do not need a big bungalow.... I intent to design the home kit the size of an average dining table, for houses in Malaysia. For Singapore area, I do not know how is the average apartment are set.

The plus point of this system is, The Fish do not need to change water and the plants do not need to give fertilizer... how much easier can it be. The monthly electricity consumption of this setup (home kit) is lest than RM 3.00 (Tiga Ringgit)

Currently I am promoting this system, not many know about it yet..

bro... from your diagram, i spots something not so clear...

1) Your plant is planted on soil or hydroponic?
2) The water pump pumps the water from 100 gallon tank 24/7 to the plants?
3) The 100 gallon tank is also the fish tank?
4) What is the 2' x 3' grow bed are for?
5) Why do i need a ball valve? to control the water volume from the water pump?
6) With your setup, do i need to feed the fish some more?

1) I use pebbles or any hydroponics medium
2) 12/7 (only during the day)
3) Yes
4) grow bed - for item 1) above
5) Ball Valve optional, these drawings I made for someone that have excess water source, just to meter the water input.
6) Its obvious you need to feed the fish, If not needed, I would be a millionaire by now.. :finga:

Oh ya... I thought the waste from the plant can feed the fishes.

We have to add some liquid fertilizer into traditional hydroponics. So, in this case, do we still need to? Or the fish shit served as fertilizer for the plant?

No Fertilizer,, it could kill the fish (some fertilizer) only fish shit do the job... that's all
