At last, I got my hands on the brand new Nikon D7000 at Lam Loong Photo House, Gurney plaza. The quoted price is Body @RM4K and with Kit 18-105mm Lens @RM4.6K (with bag and 8Gb SD card).

The grip and feel are no better than the D90 or the Canon 550D. Is it a little small and uncomfortable for my hand. Unfortunately no demo unit and no shot taken. I took the chance to explore the D300s that has much better in grip and feel. But @RM4700 for body it can be painful. Will make a decision soon... but still like to shoot a few shots with the D7000 to see the results....as for now the D300s looks so good... :$gone:

Questions?

- What type of shots to take when choosing a new camera?....
I will check for Depth of field, Low lights, ISO settings & etc
- Would you bring along your regular camera for comparison?....
I would.

Cheers!

Each time I pick one up.... I WANT IT.. I WANT IT.....than an inner voice says "er...what for you want it, huh?"

Than I walk away...

So I agreed with Aikliang...

By the way, I've been told that one of the single most important thing is the size of the sensor. More is better. Pixels is important but the sensor reigns supreme... :-$

Ace,

Exactly the same for me. Everytime I see a good DSLR, I want to buy, but then I ask myself,
1. Which of the situations in MY life so far I come across that I need to use DSLR instead of high-end compact like Canon G12?
2. In those situations, how many times would I have brought my DSLR along with me?
Then after I answer those two questions on MY own life situations, I can walk away so easily. Haha!!

BTW, you are right about the size of the sensor. The large size of the DSLR sensor gives it one of the most important advantage over compacts, ie. low light performance. Photographs in dim places are so much better from DSLR that compacts.

tympg,

The two biggest advantages of DSLR over compacts are 1. Low-light performance, and 2. fast trigger speed.

In indoor night time shots, DSLRs show their advantage best over compacts. DSLR at high ISO can afford not to use flashlight at all, or set to low-power just to highlight the front subjects. Then the whole room appears beautifully. Compact shots really no fight at all. Must view on large computer screen to see the difference (ie. not on the small LCD screen of the camera).

Also, if it is a wedding dinner, then the DSLR guy will catch the super-fast kiss. The Compact guy after pressing the shutter button, by the time the shot is taken, the couple already facing away.

So, what camera did you use for the 400+ shots? If compact camera with flashlight, then only the front few people turn out bright, right? The rest in the ballroom all dark dark one. Hehe!!

It's a Canon 650i.... a great compact camera for the outdoor... extremely disappointing for indoor flash photography... Not only the back ground is darker but the Auto focus is everywhere but the spot you want..... :frus: ... The manual focus is too slow for an action pack wedding environment. Will be going to Gurney Plaze this weekend to check out the D7000 and D300s.
