Singapore - Feedback (Q3 2009)

Postby tanshida1201 » Tue Jul 07, 2009 12:04 pm

Hi, firstly I would like to thank MFM for providing such wonderful maps to us GPS user. I do not know if this is the right place to post the below. Apology if I post in the wrong section..

Recently, I travelled along TPE (the direction is from exit 12 to exit 10), I noticed that the junction view on exit 12 does not depict the actual junction correctly..

Also, I wanted to travel along TPE to Rivervale Mall by exiting from exit 10. The correct direction should be:

1. from exit 10, turn right to Punggol Road then turn left at Rivervale Drive

However, my GPS showed:

1. From exit 10, turn right to Punggol Road and straight away turn right again as if to make an U-turn back to TPE.

Just wanted to contribute so as to make the map better..

Glad to know that you have solved your problem. :D Did they mention to you about the X3 update for Z880?

Yes, I think it will be soon.

Routing has changed in the current 090707 map. My trips to PICC, Putrajaya yesterday using 090630 and today (090707) yielded two different routes. The route using the current map made a detour at Putrajaya Link (Elite) via Lebuh Saujana. I used the same setting: Car + Recommended route.

From Mapsource:
1. 090630: 25.4km / 00:18:28
2. 090707: 24.6km / 00:20:30

In my opinion Route 1 (using 090630 map) is a better route.

At Jalan Kemajuan Subang towards SJMC or Sheraton Hotel Subang, Papago (light bluse line) takes too many turnings to reach even with "recommended" or "Shortest" settings. Garmin (yellow line) suggested most prefered routes. Same goes to the routes at Jalan Raya Barat to Jalan Teluk Pulai.

I am getting interest to know how the routing work. I think the routes are weighted based on actual or approximated speed limits / distance to travel and factor in some biases to ignore or focus on certain types of roads. :-k

Can any senior mappers share the basic idea of how the routing work. This will greatly help member like me in tracking down the routing problem.

Papago routing engine is very different from Garmin. Garmin is more advanced. It takes in speed parameter and road class parameter. Whenever possible, it will route you through the major roads (for fastest route).

Papago uses a simple weightage formula. There are 8 fixed weightage to pick from. Not very flexible. The challenge for me know is to build and improve on the formula to convert our Garmin route data to Papago's. I rely on this formula to decide what weightage to give each road.

From your feedback, I will tweak my formula slightly. This explain the difference in routing on previous versions. Each release, there is a small improvement. Based on my testing in PJ/SJ area, MFM-Papago routing is now about 90% that of MFM-Garmin. The remaining 10% will need time and your continuous feedback :)

Thanks antyong, very clear explanation. Garmin speed parameter + road class parameter = Papago Weightage. Now understand why some route calculation are so difference. =D>

Keep Up the hard work! look forward to working with you to make the routing better.

Now, I think I understand O:). I will definitely give feedback on the routing which I think needs to be improved. Thanks for the clarification.
