Taiwan Trip

Postby shoemaker676 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 3:23 pm

I will be traveling to Taiwan at the end of this year, basically thinking of going to Taipei, Tai Chung 臺中 and Hua Lian 花蓮 city, i plan to self drive (with my Nuvi) as our team member wanted to visit some of the countryside enjoy the scene + local delicacy etc... . I have contacted some of the local car rental co that I found from the web and they wanted to pre swipe my credit card sales draft purportedly to cover any traffic summonses that we might commit during the period :fire: . Is this normal? In other country that I drove before i.e Aus and Japan no such request AFAIK... any bro have any contact that can share with me. This is my travel plan :

Day1

Anybody who are familiar with Taiwan care to comment :prayer: :tq: .

Bro shoemaker676,

I just came back last month from a similar self-drive holiday. Picked up a rental car in Hualian and dropped it off in Taipeh at the end of my drive. Yes, they too swiped my credit card for summons purposes but so far, they have been honest and nothing has showed up on my credit card statement yet. There is a row of car rental companies near the Hualian railway station so it is easy to walk there to pick up your car. I got a little Colt but the same company also have larger cars and even Volkswagen vans.

The car rental company also managed to provide me with an English language Taiwan map with a 205W (since I can't read Chinese). It was extremely good and very comprehensive. I liked the way the gps unit was able to tell when we were going into a tunnel and did not have the "lost satellite reception" message. :champ:
Instead, he took the last speed you did going into the tunnel and continued showing the roads which was helpful because there were some tunnels that were quite long and there could be road forks at the end of the tunnel.

Bros,

You can check them out here www.car-plus.com.tw

I paid RM200 a day for the Colt Plus. Since I said I couldn't read Chinese, they threw in the Garmin for free. Otherwise they give you a local unit I think.

Anyway, they quite efficient so I recommend them.
