Nepenthes - Monkey Cup in Taman Desa Serdang

Postby Lalatbotak » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:36 pm

The only remaining wild stand of Nepenthes in the Seri Kembangan Valley. Nepenthes was discovered growing at the foothills of Taman Desa Serdang in 2005.

At that particular time growth of the plant was abundant and the wild stand was healthy and doing very well in the habitat. At one time you can see the inflorescence of its flowers. An incredible sight to behold for nature lovers.

Since July 2009 disturbances of the habitat due to human and feral dog activity has affected growth of this particular unique plant species . The last remaining stand of Nepenthes in the locality has dwindled and would probably disappear by mid 2010. Hopefully some conservation efforts could be carried out by our local council to preserve this last remaining Nepenthes habitat in Seri Kembangan.

this is Nepenthes Gracilis. The very common lowland pitcher plant which sometime can be found at the country roadside.

it's posibble to grow it at home. Lowland pitcher plant love hot and humid condition, just like the weather in our country. Some of the N. Gracilis is in red colour. But the pitchers are relatively unremarkable with a very thin peristome and no unusual morphological features.

Try to search for N. ampullaria and N. rafflesiana. Both of them are low land species too but more attractive than N. Gracilis. The former is cute, the pitcher really look like 'periuk', the latter is spetacular and the upper pitcher can grow up to 40cm...

Oh ya, pitcher plant are sold in flower nursery too. It's quite a popular plant among Chinese during 'piggy' year.

You may need to check at flower nursery, price range from RM10.00 to hundred plus... depend on the genus and plant size. I'm sure this plant will become the superstar in ur mom's 'hutan' garden.

I bought it in Penang and it cost RM35.00/pot.... :x . Dried up after 8-9 months... don't know why... Need to do some research on its care before getting new plants.
