Keep things simple and lite. Unless your are travelling overland all the way or by sea then the 20+kg weight penalty will not be an issue. Lugging monster bags as backpackers can be quite a liability... well unless you want to show of your latest LV trunks. Try lugging ONE - 30 kg luggage up a 300 meters stairs and it will not be funny espiceally on rush hours in the UK underground - and that is on escillators not walking up the stairs. Try 2 and you will wish you had slaves or porters to help.

I keep mine to 45 liters (max) backpack and that will be good enough. An extra 10-15 liters daypack is all the extra to consider - you can use that as carry on in the plane.

Hope that help.
