Let's start discussing about indexing of POIs and Roads and confirm ASAP. For our Thai map:

County: THAILAND
State/province: <province name> e.g. SONGKHLA
City: <district name>/<major city name> e.g. HAT YAI


Any problem with this standard? Any comment? Opinions from Thai members are much appreciated.

The word Mueang still can be found as the term for the capital districts of the provinces (amphoe mueang), as well as for a municipal status equivalent to town (thesaban mueang).

Addresses
Sois, Moos, Tambons, Amphurs, Chiangwats... How does this system work? Very logically, really. Let's start at the front door of a typical Thai house.

Outside most Thai houses is a Soi (lane) or a Thanon (road). Say the address is 18/2 Singharaj Soi 3. This translates to (Lot) 18, (House) 2. Sometimes this followed by a Moo, or a Neighbourhood; e.g., Moo 5 or Neighbourhood 5, which in turn is part of a Tambon, or Sub-District; e.g., Tambon Chang Puak or Chang Puak Sub-District. Amphurs are basically Districts, and Chiangwats are Provinces.

Prathet in Thai means country, and this website focuses on Prathet Thai, or the Kingdom of Thailand. Easy enough.

1 There is more than one way of spelling or romanizing some road names that can confuse you. The following examples are the standard romanized spellings with, in brackets, another way of spelling you may commonly find: Asok (Asoke), Si (Sri), Sathon (Sathorn), Surawong (Surawongse), etc.


2 It is common for some roads to have more than one name. For
examples, New Road = Charoen Krung Road, Wireless Road = Withayu Road, Phra Pin Klao = Somdet Phra Pin Klao, etc.

3 Some road names are written both in separate and joint form, such as
Phra Pin Klao = Phra Pinklao, Rong Muang = Rongmuang, Sanam Chai = Sanamchai, etc.

4 Some road names are preceded by the word "Thanon", which means "road" in Thai.

5 Some street names are preceded by the word "Soi", which means "street" in Thai.

Mueang - state (negeri), city, thesaban mueang = manicipal. e.g. mueang Hatyai = Hatyai city.
Khuan - hill (bukit)
Khao - mountain (gunung)
Hat - beach (pantai) e.g. Hatyai - Big beach.
Sanam - city park (suan-sar-tar-ra-naสวนสาธารณะ), (sanam thesaban), sanam ball = football field (padang bola)
Sanambin - airport
Talay/thale - sea
Talay sap - lake (tasik)
Leam - cape(tanjung) e.g. Leam shon (name of beach at Songkla) direct translation Cape of pine.
Ko/koh - island (pulau)
king Amphoe - sub district (king = branches/sub)
arw(อ่าว) - gulf (teluk)
Rongrean (โรงเรียน) -school

Thanks Bro Hornet, I think you should conduct Thai lessons for us. with just building vocabulary first related to mapping.

I've complied this initially to setup my address search table. Not too sure if this table will be of any use to the rest. Let me know and I will complete the rest of S Thailand. Can go down to Tambon level but will be stratching me a bit.
