Re: N97 - Has anyone been successful installing GMXT on it?

Postby joechong » Wed Jul 08, 2009 2:24 pm

Had a few inquiries coming in from members. So thought of posting the steps required to install GMXT on N97. Note: Courtesy of the steps posted by Kimberly of this blog who provided the steps to N96. I've merely copied the steps and provided specifics for N97.

Installation Steps
1. Download the Garmin Mobile XT for Symbian S60 3rd Edition, Ver. 5.00.50 from this link.

2. Download to your computer Garmin Mobile XT Free Basemap, Ver. 4.xx.xx from the same link above.

3. Download to your computer Garmin Mobile XT Support Files, Ver. 4.xx.xx from the same link above.

4. Download MFMv16xLite.zip from this website. Look under the board index->Public Downloads. Preferably use the lite version, as it'll remove some of the details for optimal performance on the phone. NOTE: x means version number. As of Jul 8, its MFM165Lite.exe.

5. Connect your N97 (as USB Mass Storage, not PC Suite or Ovi Suite) to your computer and make sure the N97's 32 GB built-in memory is detected as a new hard drive.

6. Now, run the recently downloaded files on the computer, one after another, in this order:

v4.xx.xxx Support File,
v4.xx.xxx Basemap File
GMXT v5.00.50
When prompted to choose storage space, always choose the phone’s mass memory (i.e. the N97's built-in 32 GB memory)

7. Disconnect phone memory from computer. It’s time to configure Garmin on your phone. Go to your phone’s File Manager >Garmin >Applications >Symbian >RES >GarminMobileXT.sis and install the .sis. If you can’t find GarminMobileXT.sis, check the root directory, it should be there. Install the .sis as per normal Nokia's application install.

8. After that, go to Applications> run Garmin Mobile XT. It won’t connect to GPS satelite yet, so just ignore it.

9. You should have received your device unlock code from the manufacturer of Garmin, however if you haven’t, there are instructions on the Internet to guide you on how to get yours ;)

10. Copy the device unlock code and paste it in a notepad, then save the file as SW.UNL

11. Reconnect your phone/memory to your computer, as USB mass storage.

12. Copy the SW.UNL file into \Garmin\

13. Then, extract MFM16xLite.zip, and copy gmapsupp.img into \Garmin\. This will be the Malaysia-Singapore free maps compiled by all the generous folks in this forum! Including me, a part-time polygon mapper.

14. Disconnect your phone from your computer.

15. Go to Applications >Garmin Mobile XT >Settings >System >Remote GPS >Select ‘Use Attached/Built-in GPS’ >Enable and it’s all done.

16. Wait for satellite signal to strengthen and then you can start navigating around various places with confidence!

Legally, there are 2 ways to run GMXT on your N97.

First way is to download GMXT and the supporting files from Garmin site and install these 3 files into your SD card. Then you need to pair your N97 with Garmin's external GPSr, eg 10X which is BT enabled. This is cumbersome and requires an external GPSr.

The other way is to purchase Garmin's GMXT SD card which comes preinstalled with GMXT as well as a map (USA if the SD card is programmed for USA). This is then a plug-and-play job - stick the SD card into your N97 and GMXT is ready to run. You will then need to install one of the free maps available for use in Msia or Spore.
