No problem, bro Anthony.
I am now waiting for my despatch clerk to come back with the postcodes directory (this is the most important link to the whole endeavour).
Oh yes, I think using a spreadsheet application to do the keying will be more efficient and faster. Must we use the "|" delimiter or can it be ","? I am using OpenOffice and its delimiters are ",", ";", ":", space & tab. Once that's done, it will be exported as a CSV file (a file which can be opened using any text editor such as Windows Notepad).
I'll prep up a sample for you to go through (most probably I'll add another column - State - for clarity). Once that passes your requirement, I'll check how many can volunteer to do the keying in and I'll scan portions of the directory to be distributed among the volunteers.

Re: Postal Codes For Malaysia
Got the postcodes directory!
Darn thing is THICK (about 550 pages of postcodes - each page has 100 postcodes
). That will give us 55,000 entries to key in. Wow....
Anyway, this is the CSV file which softcopy is attached:-
50200,Cangkat Bukit Bintang
50480,Cangkat Damansara
50480,Cangkat Duta
54000,Cangkat Keramat Hujung
50450,Cangkat Kia Peng
50250,Cangkat Perak
50480,Cangkat Persekutuan
50200,Cangkat Raja Chulan
59100,Cangkat Riong
55100,Cangkat Thambi Dollah
50480,Cangkat Tunku
Bro Anthony, will the above format be acceptable to you?
Good also to go through this exercise as some of the road names might not be in MFM so we can actually verify the road names later on. Example:-
Cangkat Persekutuan is labelled as Persekutuan, C (N3 08.332 E101 40.871)
Cangkat Tunku is labelled as Tunku, C (N3 09.589 E101 40.765)
Looks like this postcodes project has just grown double its size as now we will also have to double check the name to ensure standardization. Oh well, that's double the fun.

I will change ",C" to "Cangkat". Btw, should it be "Changkat" or "Cangkat"? Our standard is to follow the road sign.
Looking at the example, do you intend to attach post code to roads instead of areas?

Re: Postal Codes For Malaysia
The postcodes directory list "Cangkat" but some of the road signboards "Changkat". Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka defines "Cangkat" as "low hill" and it does not recognise the word "Changkat". Whoever that's ordering those road signs must be very careful and not to screw things up.
But then again, Malaysia Boleh ma!
Attaching the postcodes to Taman/Residential sites - no problem. I do expect more work needs to be done as we will have to look at a Taman, find a road name and then check the postcode directory before keying in. But we have a bit of a problem here - I did a quick run through of the directory the day before and found that some Taman/Residential sites have 2 postcodes (serious!), eg. Tmn Cheras Utama - roads beginning with numeral & ending with alphabet (eg. 2/95B) have 56100 as postcode while roads beginning with alphabet & ending with numeral (eg. CU 2) have 56000 as postcode.
Very very confusing.
Will it be problematic if we maintain following the way Pos Malaysia does it, i.e. match the postcode to the road itself?

Worth a try...
Please submit to me a small area for trials. I will convert and update in into our Garmin map. Then we finetune how we want the postcodes to be displayed and searched

In Sg, 1 building 1 code. So you could navigate with postcode, and it could direct you to specific location. For a stretch 10 terrace houses, it will be 10 postcodes for each has a unique postcode.
But in Malaysia, 1 postcode could easily cover > 10 square KM. Attached is Taiping post code 34000 for example. It covers > 20 square KM. Which I don't see the practicality for it.
I think it would information overload if in cooperate into the main map. 1 way I could think of is make a separate postcode map. Optional install like topo map and polygon during installations to cater other individual needs.
I totally agree with you.
The US Zip Code and UK Post Code can identify exact location right down the the house/residence address level and is used for more than just postal addressing. It is also used for route planning and pin point locationing.
The Malaysian Post code only goes down to area or district level. So an address search using post code alone is still too wide. For instance, if I am searching for a particular road in Subang Jaya, there is only one post code 47500 for the whole area covering Wangsa Baiduri, Bandar Sunway, Subang Utama, Subang Jaya, USJ, Subang Permai, Parts of Federal Highway, Seafield Jaya, Taman Industri Ringan Subang, Taman Industri Subang, Subang Mewah, so what is the use of putting in the post code when I already know that the road I'm looking for is in "city" Subang Jaya which is a much narrower search than 47500.
I dont see the practical use of this.

Malaysian postcodes extend to individual roads and some to certain "important" buildings. Check out the postcodes directory issued ("sold" is the more exact word) by Pos Malaysia.
Bro drsec, you got a point re focusing on "city". But let's give it a try and see what happens - if users find good use for postcodes embedded in the MFM map, great

Bro Anthony, will get you a sample by Monday. The next couple of days are spent spring cleaning during daytime so will do the data entry work at night.
Cheers & Happy New Year.

Re: Postal Codes For Malaysia
Bro Anthony,
Attached is a bigger sample of postcodes for Kuala Lumpur (a mixture of roads, buildings, Taman & govt depts). Please play around with it and let me know if it is workable.
The postcodes directory is an additional tool to help us in providing more coverage for MFM maps; I noticed some of the road names stated in the directory are not listed in MFM map (091228). This is a blessing in disguise as it will provide us with a clear idea of which areas that need to go back to & check them out (not just for KL but other areas as well).
Anyway, please let me have your feedback re the postcodes sample. If workable, great - we proceed. If not, then there is another use for the postcodes directory (see Para 2).
Cheers.
