Hi bro sabre23t
Searching is not an issue. how about display(the result of search and the while navigating)?? will it be after seach it will list out all the jalan.... then the road name hide behind that we can't see??? or 300m turn left on jalan......

sorry that i didnt really test it but last time i do see some problem like that for long address name either in c60x or garmin mobile xt i forget...

For my opinion. Better we use "Ahmad, J" due to it may faster for searching.
Anyway we already know that "J" was for jalan.
How about the long wording like e.g.: "Persiaran"
However if we use this format "Jalan Ahmad" look nicer.
All got pros & cons. Just choose "look nicer or faster searching"

Thank you.

If the map can handle partial searches and it doesn't take any time to do the searches, then a Full Name is much prefrerred (and that is why I voted for that).

All are still drill down on how you get used to it...

We take windows as example. Do you still remember the usability between XP vs Vista. When started to use vista the first day it was so much difference compared to XP... but after sometime it wasn't that bad either.

I was confused the very first day i use my nuvi. I cannot even find maybank POI in penang until moey told me MBB. But unfortunately I cannot find MBB POI in KL.

Abbreviation is a must to reduce long road names like "PERSIARAN", "LEBUHRAYA", "SUNGAI" etc. Most important is if we must set a standard that must be agree between user and mappers. Once we set Sg = Sungai, then everybody talk in the same protocol, then no problem for the use. There are a page in MSM wiki where the list of abbreviations. The problem is this page was hiding so deep inside and newbie are not realize we actually have this to refer.

Mapper also sometimes make mistake... thats why error report are important for user to feedback whatever mistake they discover in the map, including wrong abbreviations too.

Naming pattern are 2nd priority. Masjid, J or J Masjid or Jln Masjid... You do not see much problem with this kind of road name. But 1, J or 3/5, L you will have problem display when our map can handle address search... eg u want to search address: 3, Lorong 5, Tmn xxx

If we use old pattern, then nuvi will display 3 5, L xxx, Tmn.... something like that. So, it makes hard to read.

To make it easier to read and speed was not compromised... I proposed :

1) With Abbreviation in our map for road names and taman names
2) Naming pattern would be Jln 2; Jln Masjid; Lrg xxx; Psn Taiping; Tmn xxx etc instead of Masjid, J; xxx, Tmn.
3) Everyone has to follow the standards of naming strictly
4) Put a hyperlink for the list of abbreviation above annoucement link so that everyone can refer to it.

Cheers!

I vote for full name. Not only for searching but for device that have tts function, it will speak "Left turn to Jalan Pudu" instead of "Left turn on Pudu J"

antyong wrote:Our maps handle partial search now. You can search for a word in the middle of the address, etc.

The way we name our roads, using the "xxxxx, J" format was done at the beginning of time when address searches had to be done from the beginning.

This is the time to review this practice and decide whether we want to retain the current format or revert to conventional naming. Please vote.

Hi antyong, doesn't mean to pour cold water or something, but just giving my 2 cents. When I read about the partial search, I did a quick check with the symbian GMXT version and this is what I have found out.

In the 1st picture, the result 'Park, Cerok' is actually referring to 'Fair Park, Cerok' in 2nd picture. 'Whereas in POI partial search, the full road name shows. The partial address search would be good, if not for the ambiguous 'partial' results shown for viewer selection. I am not sure if bug exists for nuvi or other GMXT platforms.

About the road name convention, it would be good to have the normal format provided it would not cluster the display during navigation and those device with TTS function would definitely benefit from this naming format. What Doraemon proposed for abbreviation is quite valid, but I won't know how Lrg, Psn or Jln would sound in TTS. Anyone with TTS capability would care to comment?

p.s Thanks for all the hardwork to the contributors and mappers for MSM1.03

I can't see anything wrong with "Ahmad, J". Saves display space and less taxing on processor power to do search for older units.

The bigger problem is the inconsistency in then naming, using abbreviations or full name. I will use MSM maps for example. Eg. Try searching for Public Bank branches. Search for PBB and you will see a whole list, but many branches are missing. Why? Because they are listed as Public Bank.

I have faced this problem again and again.

FrancisTLim.
