I'm also looking for free UK maps as will travel there at year end. The link Bro Inggo gave led to wiki site about some programming thing for maps? Very confusing for the layman here.

there is link to download. need to read thru carefully and links. my UK map file size is 300MB in img format, dated 090911.
i used the openstreetmap on 255W during last visit in October. tested very accurate for used in London, Manchester, Bath, and Windermere. you should give it a try.
Garmin 255W -> TomTom 540XXL -> Garmin Etrex Legend HCX -> TomTom 620
