Please allow me to bring to your attention to these points.

MFM is a community driven by a common set of goals and norms. As a community it's survival is entirely dependent on its membership and their contributions. The are many areas of contribution but in the essence it is the data that is eventually used to produce the maps that is key. We must also realize that the data whilst may be contributed to MFM for release to MFM members as the maps, the intellectual property still resides with the owner i.e. The Mappers. Contributors including Mappers do realize that the sum of the individual parts also do not a whole make. Other members must also realize that without the contributions of its key members, then the whole raison d'etre for the community ceases.

MFM or its contributors are not obliged to provide the maps to any vendor or groups of individuals owning a particular PND platform. But as a community, if there is an overwhelming voice to produce a map for a particular platform, then as a community, MFM can decide to do so as a means of enlarging its value proposition to its community.

If the key members of the community decides not to publish a map on a certain platform, than it is their right to do so whether collectively or individually. We have to respect that right.

But it is important that everyone understand that MFM as a community decided from its very inception that it shall remain a non-profit organization and others shall not commercially benefit from its work or publications. Its founders have to this day have strongly defended this philosophy. It was also the very basis of its formation.

If any key member decides to abandon this philosophy, then it is also their right. The philosophy resides with MFM.

The majority need to decide on whether the continued support of its key members is important. Its key members must also decide whether the support of the other members is important.

Remember membership in this community is purely voluntary.

So for those who wants to push the community in a direction and the community does not wish to go in your direction, I do suggest you reconsider your actions. I remembered a sign that I saw at the entrance gate of a commando camp. It says "Kedatangan mu tidak diundang, kalau tak suka sila pulang". When translated it means "Your presence is not at our invitation, if you don't like it, you can always leave".

I go with the voice of the majority and the key members for my contributions are too small to mention. I also plead with these key members to abandon their "retirement" plans.

Excuse an old man talking here.

Cheers Everyone

For those using papago, the latest announcement by Unker Sunny probably will eased your anger...& hope Bro Edmund too:

antyong (retired) wrote:Dear MFM members and guests,

We were informed that our MFM-Papago 100415 map were re-engineered to make into Falome map. Our mapping team consider this action a serious breach of MFM intellectual property. Based on majority decison, we decided to stop our MFM-Papago release until the following conditions are satisfied:
  • That MCL removes the map named "FaLomeMap-150410-part(1 to 4)" from its website from its website until the resolution of this issue
  • That Maction Technologies, Inc clarifies in writing how our MFM-Papago map could be reverse-engineered to be used by another unrelated product by an unrelated company
  • That Maction Technologies, Inc makes a written commitment that there will be no further breach of MFM intellectual property
  • That no party or entity is holding a threat of legal action on Malfreemaps or its key members arising from any map release and its related online discussions.

Hi members,

One condition have been met. That is Sensonic-global have remove the map from their download site.

Now we need Maction Technologies written commitment as stated above.

Further, please rest assured that MFM will progress further. Papago and Falome release will be discuss and announcement once finalised.

Mapper need time for further discussion.

Jangan susah hati, jangan marah, jangan gaduh gaduh la friends. Take this as a test of the community's strengh.

Consider this as siaran tergendala sebentar. I believe Antyong will not abandon his baby just like that, and things will be back to normal in some time.

My 2 cents :)

Guys/Otais,

I'm one of the newbies here....it's very sad to see what is happening to our MFM. Everywhere and anywhere things like these can happen but I really hope that our Otais will reconsider their retirement and continue with our beloved MFM project. I have contributed a bit to MFM and will contribute as long as MFM stays...we have been doing very well so pls don't abandon MFM at this stage..... :prayer:

On behalf of edchaung.

Hi All MFM valued members:

I am shocked to see my retirement had became a major discussion topic in MFM. I think I've owed you all an explanation why I've decided to retired to prevent all the speculations that could do major damaged to MFM.

As some of my closed friends knew, I've been alway be supportive to Papago Map. Why? Because I was overwelmed when we started papago map. For me, we are using a third party compiler for Garmin map, there is a risk in future that Garmin could keep updating their firmware, and one day, our 3rd party compiler won't be able to produce Garmin map....as we what we've seen in Garmin Nuvi 1K+ series....our customized POI can't be displayed.

So when papago came in, I was greatly involved in the routing errors feedback, improvement feedback, and subsiquently drawings JV for papago.

My personal thinking all the while:

1. MFM is a mapping community, we stay neutral and don't involved in any outside business related conflicts.
2. We want to produce as many maps format as possible, so that our community can grow and more members are benefited from free maps, in return, we get feedbacks and contributions, that make our maps to improved day by day.
3. Who ever give us their compiler, we will try to compile their map format, to benefit more users.

I think the issue started when M3 acquired the exclusive right to Papago GPS devices. For me, it had nothing to do with us, we should just continue to release our papago maps. We shouldn't get involved in outside business related issues. To make thing worst, later on Falome came in. There are some parties tried to link them together, and tried to complicate Papago and Falome. For me, I don't care. We can produce Papago Map, we can produce Falome Map. It is not for us to comment.

Things had became worst when some senior in MFM decided not to release papago map anymore. For me, this is totally unacceptable and unfaired to our papago gps users, where the population is growings. So I made up my mind and decided to leave.

I want to make it clear that my retirement got nothing to do with jararaca, shairul787 or antyong. It is just my personal will. So please do not involved my nick in any of your post to achieve your personal agenda.

And to all members, while our new Leaders, Bro OngCC and Bro Sunn try to settle the current issue, please stop all your speculations. Please have faith in Bro OngCC, Bro Sunn, Mappers and Moderators.

Best Regards to All.

Sincerely Yours,

Edchuang
