Garmin POI

Postby rling » Fri Sep 19, 2008 12:38 pm

This was a query I asked at Malsingmaps. Is it an option to publish the POIs as a .csv file (as opposed to incorporated into an .img) to allow it to be used in programs other than Garmin? I have a personal preference for Igo2006 and lately iGo8, but the POI in those programs is inadequate. Will use Garmin when I do drop in for holidays, but its interface leaves a lot to be desired (compared to iGo8)

To answer your question, I think GPSBabel is what you look for. :)
Malaysia and Singapore dedicated website for Food Point Of Interest or commonly known as Food POI. GPI and GDB available for download. All foods tested with photos.

If you are using igo8, you need POIs in kml format no? Do you have the tools to make Igo8 POI from csv?

Once it is in csv format, it is very easy to convert to other formats (ov2, kml etc) with POIEdit or other online tools. Was just thinking that this is mainly a Garmin forum, posting the POI in the Garmin CSV format would be useful for those using Garmin with the official Garmin Malaysia maps, and at the same time, make the POI available for other devices.

POI Icons Not So Nice in GMPC

Postby jacko » Mon Dec 08, 2008 11:49 pm

I was trying GMPC software and installed MFM for testing purpose. I tried both Custom POI and Full Customization option and the POIs do not look good in GMPC in both options. You can see the black shadow background for all POI icons...

Anyone tried before and got the same experience like me? Is there anyway to tweak it for better look like what we have in nuvi?

Thanks!

Just tried. Same result as yours. Some icons have black square as background. I have yet try on GMXT. Does this happen to other dedicated GPRs as well? I hope this does not only happen to GMPC as I have also experienced some unsupported proximity alerts icons elsewhere too and thus feel imho that sometimes GMPC are left out in the bigger scheme of things. Not sure how many carpc users using GMPC are out there but once one get used to GPS on a bigger screen, not to mentioned the many capabilities a carpc can bring, it is hard to make a switch to standalone GPRs. Hope in due time, GMPC will receive better support from the communities.
