Garmin 255w hangs at Loading Maps screen
Hi all, I've tried some solutions but all don't seem to work.
My problem: Garmin 255W hangs during the Loading Maps screen, and sometimes during navigation even.
Temp fix: Holding the power off button for a few seconds allows it to switch off, and after 1-2 tries, it gets to the map page successfully. However, this is very disconcerting especially when driving halfway.
Sub-problem discovered: This intermittent access of the GPS device also results that I cannot access it via USB for a long period of time. I tend to lose the connection after about 30 seconds of my PC detecting it. This problem also means I cannot update via webupdater.
Googled fix: Tried to do a hard reset by holding the bottom right of the screen. The prompt comes up asking if I want to delete all user data. I click Yes, and it reboots, but nothing appears to be deleted, even my wallpaper is still there. And the Loading Maps problem.
Any of you kind sirs here got any guide on how else I can recover this? This isn't a local set, so I can't really send it for warranty repair =(

Re: Garmin 255w hangs at Loading Maps screen
Sorry to hear of your problem.
Most likely your map is giving the problem. First try to download a newer map or use a known good map to test out. You may want to load this new map into a SD card to test as any new map have problem/s. Rename your current map to other file name (if it is inside the main unit memory) to disable it.
It is difficult to know if your firmware is giving a problem without trying to update it. Have you tried connecting it to other PC? Your USB problem is not just confined to your Nuvi but the PC too.
Hope this helps... cheers!

Re: Garmin 255w hangs at Loading Maps screen
Hi all, thanks for the replies so far.
The map I am using is currently the Mal-Sing map from this forum, dated Dec 09 iirc. I have tried to update with the latest, but due to my usb problems, have not been able to do so successfully.
I do not think my usb cable is having any problems, as I have just been able to connect my camera to it using the same cable.

New updated map can be copied onto a memory card via card reader.. then plug in the unit and try it. If the map in the main memory is at fault.. maybe disabling it at the setting (map info) could bypass it during start up? Not sure.

We are MAL FREE map forum.

About the cable .. no harm trying... most of my camera or handphone are using the think cable... but it does not work for my GPS.

the red color mark, indicated your cable is insufficient for a large current power, use Thick cable or Y-USB Cable (uses two usb ports cascaded at the same time as serial DC-connecting to boost current) to solved your problem..
you cannot using usb DATA cable camera for PND's GPS, because camera have self battery for power.
even GPS 've using battery too, but for "USB mode operating" usually needs more external current to operation..
Using THICK POWER USB cable... not THIN DATA USB cable..
just do it..
note: is you cannot found THICK "Power" USB cable, can also uses the Y-cable usb is used for external 2,5" hard drive...

...maybe the -m'force'm- will be with you, always..

Re: Garmin 255w hangs at Loading Maps screen
If you are technical enough to understand high speed data transfer via cables, you'll know that the quality of the wires and connectors are more important than the Thick or Thin cables. Most quality USB cable comes with an EMI core/sleeve molded at one end.
I think his problem is more than just the USB connection as the unit also hang during operation. The best way is to use a SD card to run and disable the internal memory map (either by renaming or de-selecting within the GPS).... cheers!
