Very interesting alternative method bro WeiQi00! :D The only thing I don't like going into the diagnostics mode is that it erases my satellite almanac data in my Nuvi and it takes minutes to download the almanac from the geosynchronous SATs hovering above. :(

Yup, that's the only way to charge and use Nuvi at the same time if connected to a mini-USB charger (not sure with Garmin original chargers though).

Just to point out that the almanac is downloaded from the GPS satellites. The GPS satellites are NOT geosynchronous.

Yes, any charger with output rated at 5V/1A should be fine with Nuvis.

Here is a video clip how I charge my nuvi with Motorola's original charger (rating 5V, 500mA) Charging completed (100%) around 5 hours.

or
the youtube link :)

Enjoy.

Hint : Reinsert the usb plug when it shows your nuvi model at the bottom of the screen.
Hint 2: Decrease brightness to around less than 20%
Hint 3: Switch off the device and silde it in HOLD position.

Does anyone experience using the Direct AC to 12V socket adapter? You must use your cradle and the car charger though. Planning to buy one at Pasar Road and save the ridiculous RM170 charger.

Though it can be done, why complicate life. Just get a Mains to 5V mini to USB will suffice. Nuvis are not meant to be portable and used in a car and charged through its lighter socket.

If you want it to be portable and yet want the extra "juice" then an "emergency" charger that uses AAA batteries will be a better choice.
