Ok. I will try this but it doesn't make sense as if I can convert using gpsbabel from gdb to gpi directly why can't it work? Also I doubt going the long way ie gdb>gpx>gpi is going to make any difference. Anyone else having a similar problem?

Bro, don't seem to work on gpx file i think.

I think, it should be in this order of converting:
GDB -> GPX -> GPI

Hi Bro caritempat, AFAIK, the proper way of creating 100% Garmin-compatible gpi file is by using the following tools which developed by Garmin:
1) POI Loader (freeware);
2) GPI Creator (commercial software, USD500).

FYI, the gpi file created by GPSBabel may not 100% Garmin-compatible as the conversion algorithm is created via reverse engineering.

If your source data is in gdb format, then the free and correct way to create gpi file is as follows:
1) gdb -> gpx by using MapSource / GPSBable / other conversion software.
or
gdb -> csv by using any text editor or Excel.
2) csv / gpx -> gpi by using POI Loader.
3) Save the gpi file in folder, [SD]:\Garmin\POI.

As this type of POI is classified as custom POIs, it only can be searched and viewed via Where to? -> Extras-> Custom POIs.

Thanks very much. I have finally got it though not through the straight forward way . Like to share how I did it for the benefit of others who might have the same issue as me.

1) download the gdb file and save on desktop
2) open gpsbabel
3) input gdb file (on desktop)
4) output as Garmin POI database
5) open Garmin POI database. You will see the coordinates and comments.
6) Copy and paste into excel (with minor adjustments of contents to fit the cells within excel) and save as csv.
7) use POI Loader and save in SD card.

I don't know whether there is a shorter cut than this but boy, I am glad I finally got this solved!

For me, the best approach is

gdb ---(MapSource)---> gpx ---(POI Loader)---> gpi.
2 steps and 2 softwares / tools.

compare with

gdb ---(GPSBabel)---> Garmin POI database ---(text editor)--->---(Excel)---> csv ---(POI Loader)---> gpi.
4 steps and 4 softwares / tools.

Bro 76gpsguy, Bro Norwadi, yes, you guys are right. The steps that you both recommended are indeed shorter and better. Unfortunately, I only have a Nuvi 200W and it does not come with mapsource software and as such I cannot use any steps that involves using the mapsource tool. I tried to download mapsource before but it seems that you can't unless you have a previous earlier version. So, for me no choice lah but to use the long and winding road for now . Cheers!
