Who say no other cloned TomTOm, Navigon or IGO?
Many of them start with these Clone.... but seldom see in Malaysia because of maps support...

Ooo...I am not aware of that, the cloners are that advanced ... it will wonderful if they can make TomTom, Navigon or iGO clones WHICH can uses Garmin map..Example, navigon UI but runs on garmin/mapking maps. My personal impression, most of the cheap GPSr are using Mapking, and it's UI seem to be too crowded and need some more refinements.

i've briefly inspected the unit at the PC fair. Apparently its a standard PNA running CE and IMO a hacked version of MobileXT for WinMo and most probably not authorised by Garmin.

Map refresh rate seems very slow compared to my Nuvi760 and this while the GPS receiver is off. The GPS chipset is Sirf Centrality which i have no experience at all as to its performace in real life. Internal memory limited to 64 which is barely enough for full fledge Mobile XT and map is stored in the SD which by the way is not HC capable.

I would buy the unit if i have extra cash just for testing, but unfortunately i don't after i bought my self Acer Aspire one. Intend to run MobilePC on Aspire One instead

I have found this wonderful info about mapset files in nuvi 7x0 and 7x5.

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topi ... _ID=120804

Article's summary.. 7x0 can use up to 6 map files, and 8 files for 7x5
Nuvi internal (diagnostic utility) OS map naming
-----------------------------------------------------------
7x0/7x5

1. PROM1 = gmapprom.img
2. PROM2 = gmapprom1.img
3. Suppmap1 = gmapsupp.img (nuvi drive only)
4. Suppmap = gmapsupp.img (SD Card drive only)
5. Dir DB = gmapoem.img
6. Basemap = gmapbmap.img

7x5 only

7. TZMap = gmaptz.img
8. 3DMap = gmap3d.img

Actually the article missed 3DMap1 = gmap3d1.img in 7x5. So the total files for 7x5 is 9. Actually I tried the gmap3d1.img and it works... Currently I have 6 differents map files.

(internal)
1) MFM v1.26+ MFM-SG v122 + MSM-Borneo 2.30 = gmapprom1.img
2) City Navigator MYSG v3.0 = gmapsupp.img
3) Malaysia (EM+WM) topo = gmap3d1.img

(SD slot)
4) Bluechart G2 Vision. = gmapsupp.img (testing purposes)

(Not being used yet).
5) gmapoem.img

(Not changes)
6) City Navigator North America 2009 = gmapprom.img
7) City Navigator North America 2009 3D = gmap3d.img
8) gmaptz.img
9) gmapbmap.img

Total = 9 map files.

How to charge your Nuvi via a USB cable with your PC/laptop

Postby stratman2 » Sat Jan 03, 2009 3:06 pm

I had been searching the 'Net for some way to charge my Nuvi while using my PC and laptop. I found some articles that may have worked for the author, but not practical for me to emulate.

Two methods I found were:

- Rewiring the USB pins so that they can transmit 5v DC power to the Garmin device. (I don't want to go this approach as I'm not good at soldering pins). ](*,)

- Booting up your Nuvi, waiting for the maps to load and waiting for the precise right time to plug/unplug the USB cable. (I found this frustrating to get the timing right, because it means unnecessary wear and tear to the mini-USB port on my Nuvi). :ko:

One day I found out the easiest method is to simply logically "eject" your Garmin drives from the computer. I assume that you have the supplied Garmin USB cable that can also charge the device. If you don't have one, you can also use ANY standard USB cable (e.g. for a digital camera) that can power the unit.

Here's how:

1. Plug in your Nuvi into your computer/laptop. Windows will initiate the usual connectivity with your GPSr. Right now, you're in the mode where you can transfer data/to from Mapsource or browse the contents of your Nuvi (and/or SD card inserted).

2. Locate your system tray and look for the icon that says "Safely Remove Hardware". In my example below, it's the first icon from the left.

3. Left-click on the icon and you'll see whatever attached external storage devices attached to your computer. In this example I only have my Nuvi attached to my laptop.
ScreenShot015.jpg

4. Select the correct drive(s) in your list and click on the drives that you want to disconnect. If you have other USB devices like external hard disks, thumb drives they'll show up as other drive letters. Be sure to eject only your Nuvi device.

5. That's it! Your Nuvi will automatically reboot and go into the navigation mode, so you use it while charging it. To go into the charge-only mode, simply switch off your Nuvi.

6. To go back to the normal connectivity with the computer, turn off/on your Nuvi. Windows will revert to the normal USB storage device mode, enabling you to transfer data to/from Mapsource.

For Windows Vista/Linux or other operating systems, look for the similar command(s) to logically disconnect your USB device. This example is from a Win XP environment.

Hope this helps! :)

For NUVI610, it is very easy
Just connect it to PC/laptop using USB cable. The GPS unit turns on automatically. After the "Garmin Copyright Notice" came out push the shut-down button. Then "Going to charge mode..." displayed momentarily indicating that the unit is being charged.

Tried that trick before, but I could not get the timing right. But if you turn off the unit so that it goes into the charging mode, you can't use the Nuvi while charging it at the same time, can you not? \:D/

Even my nuvi's home charger also will turn my nuvi200w to USB mode.
So, I used to use the method below to charge my nuvi200w.
