I found this forum from a Papago GPS brochure I picked up.

I had bought a Papago GPS Model R5890 with bluetooth at a PC Fair in Kuala Lumpur last year. The outside of the box has a sticker that says: M3GPS X5SE Papago Inside, and that there are 5 SEA country maps, which includes Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, and Thailand.

I am completely at a loss about how to update the device with new maps, and I had spent a lot of time looking for information on this forum. But I must admit that because of my ignorance about GPS, I could not make head or tail of most of what I have read - and that is not an exaggeration. So I must admit defeat and take the chance of making myself a nuisance.

I had started by reading the About Malfreemaps topic, and I was very impressed and moved by the kind sentiments contained in it about the experts here being kind enough to spend their time advising complete (and perhaps to them, dumb) newbies like me.

I read somewhere here that the Papago device can be charged through the USB connection on a PC. Well, in my case, when it was new, it could not be - even after I kept it on for more than 24 hours. I had taken it to the distributor, and the techie's advice was to charge it using the car charger. I had then done so.

Today, when I connected it to the USB, the device switched on, but there is no indication that it is being charged (like what one sees when charging mobile phones). However, if I use the car charger, there is indication of the device being charged. The other observation I have of my device is that it takes a long time (about 5-10 minutes or about 1 to 2 kilometres) before it locates the satellites. Can any expert tell me whether my device is faulty?

Anyway, I have downloaded from this site, the file MFM-PPG-C100408.exe - supposedly maps of Malaysia and Singapore.

I know I may be too demanding and perhaps selfish too if based on the information about my GPS device I ask whether any expert can describe to me the step-by-step (in real detail) way of updating the downloaded file into my device. I cannot understand from the FAQ that I had read how to do it exactly, and I hope I can be excused if I ask for help specific to my particular device.

What will happen to my other maps if I do update? And for future use, how do I include other maps of, say, Hong Kong, or the USA, or whatever? Are there any points I have to careful about in order NOT to mess up my device. I have as I write this backed up the contents of my device into my PC.

I also came across something called the X5.2, which like the X5SE, I take to be equivalent to a PC operating system ("OS"). Am I right? And is the "OS" specific to each device, or can my device be "upgraded" to the X5.2? Anyway, is it an upgrade, in the first place?

And for now, a final question: are all GPS devices similar? My wife has a Gogopal device. Can it use maps other than those provided by the distributor?

Sorry for the long post, but it may be necessary for whoever wishes to make me less ignorant, and to whom I will be deeply appreciative. :tq:
