The IMG files found in a Mapsource mapset folder are only part of a Mapsource mapset installation (they're placed in this folder during mapset installation), meaning Mapsource will not read an IMG file natively.

You can only create user data such as routes, waypoints and tracks in Mapsource. This data behaves only as an overlay over the installed mapset. When you need to correct some data, just create it in Mapsource, usually with reference to the underlaying map. Then it should be saved as GDB and uploaded to the forum. Mappers will then do the necessary corrections to the IMG based on the GDB.
BTW, map selection in Mapsource is necessary only when sending (Mapsource installed) maps to device.
