Road Hazard Custom POI thread

Postby stratman2 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 5:18 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm gathering data on road hazards in the Peninsular Malaysia to make a custom POI with proximity alerts for MFM. The purpose of this POI is to let the driver know of potential dangers on the road ahead, especially on trunk roads. Yes I know, the hazard waypoints show up during navigation but drivers should keep their eyes on the road and not on the GPS screen.

Hey, I figured out, if you have a Garmin device it should give you more than just telling you how to get from Point A to Point B!

So far I've extracted waypoints from the MFM map but there's only about two dozen of them or so that I've discovered so far. I'm sure there are more than that. :-?

What I would like from you are known waypoints of:

- Accident prone areas/killer stretches, intersections etc
- Sharp bends
- Narrow, twisting stretches
- Foggy areas
- Roads prone to landslides, rockfalls, sinkholes, floods
- Crosswinds
- Any other major road hazards

Priority will be given to trunk and minor roads where most of people aren't familiar with.

I don't get to travel much these days so I seek your help in contributing waypoints (in GDB or GPX format) of road hazards that you're familiar with in this thread here.

thanks MFM'ers! :tq:

I remember sometime back there's a posting on accident prone areas in MSM.
http://www.malsingmaps.com/forums/viewt ... &sk=t&sd=a

Bro badrol has contribute a dangerous bend under N2 57.287 E101 45.122.

And wikipedia some areas are listed down for your reference.
List of accident-prone areas in Malaysian tolled expressways and highways

Hope these helps.
Everyone contribute a bit, eventually we can enjoy and benefit more in our navigation.

Thanks Ed for the link to MSM, that's two or three more waypoints to add (I now have 66 waypoints). The Wikipedia link doesn't have the coordinates but I think I can figure out the dangerous spots. :prayer: Obviously there are literally hundreds of killer bends but it's hard to search for them on MSM map. :frus:

The hard part is deciding on the optimum alert distances for each and every waypoint - not too far and not too close either.

Contributors are also welcome to PM me with the Mapsource files or coordinates if they don't want to post here.

http://bencanaalam.jkr.gov.my/ has the coordinates of some roads that are closed due to floods, landslides, etc. The list is updated daily and I've created a mashup site at http://nyem.appspot.com/bencana to automatically convert the road coordinates to gpx format. There's also an option to directly write the waypoints onto Garmin devices with Garmin Communicator API.

Since the roads are totally impassable I wonder if it's possible to set these as custom avoidance. My GMXT can only set custom avoidance manually, no option to import external data.

Thanks, Nyem. You've got a nifty looking blog there. Appreciate the direct send-to-GPS feature on your blog. Custom avoidance features are pre-set into the Garmin model, e.g. "traffic", "unpaved roads", "tolls", "highways" - but nothing for flood prone areas. (That's when the FM TMC traffic data comes in handy!)

Notice I mentioned "flood prone", which means that the areas are not always flooded but they do when it rains heavily for days. Same goes with landslide prone roads.

Anyway, I'll incorporate your waypoints in my list... :tq: :good:

Some additional poi's

Bro DStartman2..I'll be honoured to report in other locations as well on the abovementioned issue for our community...I have spotted lots of it on road I travelled..hopefully this will help us to reduce fatal accidents or being more attentive/alert on road especially for those night travellers out there. :peace:

Thanks very much for your contribution, brother Mohicans! O:) I don't know anything about polygon mapping and map updates (I'll leave these important tasks to our honorable mappers, Sunn, Stimix and Antyong et al) therefore the best I can do to make MFM a better place is to contribute custom POIs and later, Tour Guide files.

Submitted earlier to the other side in March this year, but it was not updated. There is a water spill (signage says "Air melintas jalan") across Hwy 3 Mersing - Kuantan road at N3 21.820 E103 25.193.

Crossed that area about 3 weeks ago... it was bone dry. I'm sure it is not now since the monsoon had started.

Along the way from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu (via Lipis, road 8), there are some POI's of Sharp Bend, Landslide, and Road Construction.
But during my last travel along this road, I did NOT hear any of this alert POI (also NO text alert). Do I miss the required files for these?
I only hear alerts for Speed Camera, Police Roadblock and Police Ambush.

Thanks.
