All,

Just want to get advice from all. Currently my nuvi200 with V3.4 firmware/software and HWID = 660 as below. Should I remain to current situation or upgrade to latest firmware/software and patch up with above patch?

<Model>
<PartNumber>006-B0660-00</PartNumber>
<SoftwareVersion>340</SoftwareVersion>
<Description>nüvi 200</Description>
</Model>

Hi Chee Loong,

Garmin offers firmware updates to address bugs and other issues. It is definitely to your advantage to update to the latest firmware. However, if in the past you hung on to v3.40 because of the hidden tracklog feature, that is understandable. But now, we have a patched v5.00 firmware which still allows you to use the hidden tracklog feature so why not update to v5.00? You have nothing to lose but everything to gain. Bear in mind that v3.40 is nearly 2 years older than v5.00 so a lot has changed.

On the other hand, if v3.40 works well for you, there will be those who will argue that if it ain't broke, why fix it? So the choice is really yours to make.

I would not update beyond v5.00 though unless a new patch for a newer version of firmware is available.

[quote="JasonLee"]

Next, unzip the downloaded patch which will contain 3 files: HWID01000500.rgn; readme.txt & Updater.exe. The Updater.exe must be run while your unit is in the pre-boot mode.

i'm not brave enough to try it..and still blurry..which folder to unzip the 3 files..is it garmin folder?. i check my nuvi 200w HW ID = 0737 and my current FW is 4.00

thanks #-o

You would have downloaded the patch into a folder on your PC. You can unzip to a subfolder of that folder or in that folder itself (on your PC). The Updater.exe must be run on your PC with the GPS in pre-boot mode connected by USB cable. Quite an easy procedure really.

Of course things can go wrong. I would back-up all the files on the GPSr first. Make sure that your Windows Explorer is set to view ALL FILES including hidden and system files so you will not miss anything. There are enough articles written about how to restore your firmware in most forums so there is no real worry in case the update goes wrong. Updates can also fail even when you use Webupdater and update from the Garmin website.

For those who have successfully patched their GPSrs, here is a precautionary tip. You would not want to lose the newly found tracklog recording feature through an unintentional automatic update of your firmware so if you have installed Webupdater, go to your Windows Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and UNINSTALL IT now. I have just done mine.

thank bro jasonlee

one more question.
in readme txt says : "You have to rename 073701000400en.rgn to 073701000400.rgn before use with updater.exe
(tool from garmin update site)
This is slightly patched file, in .rgn form-factor."

where to locate or find .rgn file to rename it to 073701000400.rgn? :oops:

Hi bro zuree,

I think that readme.txt is a bit outdated. Neadrenalin is Polish (I think) and presumably he made several versions in different languages and the 'en' in 073701000400en.rgn denotes the English version. I believe when you download from http://e-trex.info/fw/nuvi/2xxW/fw_nuvi ... acklog.rar and unzip the file, the rgn file is one of the 3 files in the zipped package and should be correctly named without the 'en'. Should it still be there, it is a simple matter of renaming the file by deleting the 2 letters 'en'.

Hi JasonLee,
I am considering update to latest firmware since more bug fixed. With above statement, is it mean the patch file only work with v5.00 and below? In future, if new firmware/software release, it can't have the tracking feature? :-k

Hi bro Chee Loong,

I am quite sure you will lose this feature if you allow Garmin to update your patched v5.00 to say v5.10 unless somebody makes a patch for v5.10 when you need to patch again. Hence I cautioned that after you have done the patch, you should not update your firmware any more and take the precaution of uninstalling Webupdate to prevent an unintentional automatic update.
